Art Censorship - your view?, by gbh on Jul 19, 2007 1:43:01 GMT 1, What's the general or common view?
Should an artist be able to create what they want? If an individual or even the majority deem it not cool or offensive should the artist curb their creativity?
Where would we be if the likes of Hirst, Wim Delvoye, (insert other nutters here), etc. were censored?
Interested to hear everyone's differing opinions.
edit: spelling

Art Censorship - your view?, by Ågent ßacardi on Jul 19, 2007 2:19:30 GMT 1, Does censorship EVER have a place?
I think so... for instance, I wouldn't want my 5-year-old child (who absorbs everything like a sponge at that age) to learn and repeat adult language and mannerisms from TV. Not that there's anything wrong with adult situations/language/mannerisms, but they're just too young to grasp the context at that age. (I don't have children, it's just an example).
As for art however, I don't believe there's much censorship that's prevalent. I can't think of an example where an artist has said "I wanted to do such and such, but I wasn't allowed to". Not in modernized countries, at least... but then again, it may just be due to my ignorance

Art Censorship - your view?, by gbh on Jul 19, 2007 2:27:34 GMT 1, Understood re the TV/kids thing.
In an art context: What about where an artist has done something as they wished and then the work has been censored by others - galleries, individuals, etc.?
Is that allowable under any circumstances?

Hmmm. That's a tough question, and I don't think there'll ever be a definitive answer. For one, if an artist isn't allowed to send his intended message through a piece, then why even create that piece at all? Might as well scrap the entire exhibition, 'cos whatever that's gonna end up being on display wouldn't be what you wanted to say anyway. So looking at it this way, then I'd say it's unjustifiable to allow such censorship. To censor art is to defeat the entire purpose of art itself.
On the other hand, think of a scenario where the artist is Hitler. He puts up gory paintings and sculptures depicting the mass murder of Jewish people, sending his personal message that a particular group of people in society should be exterminated. Or a more up-to-date example in the real world today: A radical islamic jihadist artist putting up an exhibition depicting the mass extermination of everything American/Western/'infidelic'. Would censorship (i.e., by banning that exhibition) be a saving grace in this case? Should such an exhibition be allowed to be seen by the public as intended, even though 'controversial' wouldn't even begin to describe the content?

How about that one? I know it's kind of an extreme piece , but it was still censored. Might be NSFW or not.

Art Censorship - your view?, by beejoir1 on Jul 19, 2007 8:58:33 GMT 1, Hirst was censored in his last show, they wouldn't let him show his dodgy skull made of flies next to the diamond skull if I remember correctly.

Art Censorship - your view?, by misteraitch on Jul 19, 2007 9:26:37 GMT 1, Usually, I create what I want and then MrsH (my voice of reason) has on regular occasions suggested that I shouldn't release certain pieces - usually as it's going to really offend someone.
Sadly, I've got a folder full of images that'll probably never see the light of day - which is a shame. Personally speaking, and I know it's not everyone’s view or art, but I think it should force healthy debate, and raise questions.
As the old adage goes 'A picture paints a thousand words' - so I say use them all ;D

Art Censorship - your view?, by stoopydex on Jul 20, 2007 2:51:27 GMT 1, About a year ago some street artists had a show shut down before it even opened. The art was basically parody of giant corporation logos and names. Some of the artists did not bother to change the logos. They would just change the spelling or reword the name of the corporation to something funny or ironic. My point is they were infringing on copywritten and and trademarked material. A certain percent of the image has to be changed or altered to not infringe. Any professional artist knows how important it is to get your own material copywritten or trademarked so people can't take your image and sell it as there own. Maybe this example isn't so much art vs. censorship as it is art vs. the law but the show was still shut down.

Art Censorship - your view?, by BK83 on Jul 20, 2007 18:20:03 GMT 1, freedom of creativity ceases where censorship begins. there is no place for censorship in art --freedom of expression is vital to the art world.
