Shipping Alternatives, by jhayes94108 on Jul 20, 2007 0:37:10 GMT 1, I am looking to trade a piece with someone in United Kingdom from the United States, and I have a question about shipping. What are some of the best shipping alternatives to USPS, or Royal Mail? And what are some of the shipping companies that offer the best insurance? Are there any kind of hand delivered services so that a piece could show up, be approved, and then the traded piece is returned and once again approved? In other words, are there any ways that I can make the person I am trading with comfortable when we are trading Signed Banksys across the sea?

Use DHL or a service like that and pay the extra money to have it over nighted so you both feel secure and happy with the trade...

Shipping Alternatives, by BME on Jul 20, 2007 9:01:27 GMT 1, This is a really big issue. Royal Mail, for instance, will only allow insurance up to 2.5k. Even the cheapest signed Banksy these days will go for considerably more than that.
DHL etc are okay, but last time they wanted me to provide two dealer valuations before they would offer insurance for the amount I requested. The cost of formal valuations is high and it all takes time too. There are specialist art couriers in the UK and the US, in the circumstances If the pieces are really valuable I think its worth using them, although it will set you back a few hundred quid at least you have some peace of mind!

Shipping Alternatives, by Harveyn on Jul 20, 2007 9:15:35 GMT 1, It would have to be Fedex for me. Pay the fattest express service and take out insurance. The slower the service (economy etc) the more opportunity for damage. I have had art from the USA delivered the next day by Fedex and everything has been perfect. I have had prints delivered from Europe on economy that have taken several days and have been damaged (including one this morning (bin job))!!
The other key factor is packaging.

Shipping Alternatives, by lastpost on Jul 21, 2007 13:08:38 GMT 1, DO NOT use ParcelForce...they have lost my LV canvas...and even more annoyingly, they could not give a damn and will only communicate via email - so I can not even take my frustration out on anybody.
