Degree Shows, by corblimeylimey on Jun 15, 2007 21:30:53 GMT 1, I've just come back from the Exeter Art Degree Show, I'd highly recommend you attend your local degree shows, good fun, great atmostphere, and you can spot new talent and possibly buy their art.
I'll be posting a few pics in different posts and maybe this could be the place to post pics of your local degree shows too.
I really liked this guys work,
Benjamin Noyes,
He was a nice guy too, although slightly worse for wear after a few drinks, but hell that's what the artists are meant to do.

Insects + CCTV cameras = derivative Banksy
Thanks nevertheless for posting the photos. A reminder that we all need to get out more.

Degree Shows, by corblimeylimey on Jun 15, 2007 21:57:18 GMT 1, Fantastic. Was this at the Uni main site? I was at St. Lukes (up Heavitree way!) doing my teaching degree about 10 years ago. My main subject was art, so I had to put on a similar degree show. Brings back some memories (albeit slightly hazy ones- I was a student after all) Some interesting work there CBL. I certainly agree with you- if you can get to some degree shows it's well worth it
It's at the Earl Richards Road North site off Topsham Road Exeter, although in fact it's actually part of Plymouth University Art & Design so it covered fine art, photography, design, graphics and 3D design.

Degree Shows, by corblimeylimey on Jun 15, 2007 22:05:21 GMT 1, ruatcaelum, Noyles was the star for me, surprisingly the only stencil type work there! and although the camera creatures do remind of Banksy I think his work had his own stamp on it, for sure. This is just the start for him, just finished uni, he has everywhere to go from here, he just needs a bit of luck I guess.
A nice touch was his contact cards (pictured in a holder next to his name) were hand sprayed originals.

Comments noted, corblimelimey.
For the insects and CCTV cameras, however, a bit too close to this image:

Yeah, I'm well aware of that image, and do see the connection, although Noyles did have his circuit board angle too, as well as 3D models.

Haha. All right, then! I stand corrected. Your beverage experience sounds far more pleasurable than mine has ever been at degree shows.
I suppose that, for the hundreds who are "just looking" or curious, there will always be the expectations of the odd Saatchi to cater for.

Well spotted CBL.
Did you pop in the Imperial while you were in Exeter? A nice ale house with some very fine works of art in there aswell most nights

Degree Shows, by reados on Jun 15, 2007 23:52:57 GMT 1, nice one CBL, im going to go to the Falmouth school of art show, ill try and remember my camera!!, i think it starts on the 20th,
great way of picking up something reasonable and there are no preconceptions as all the artists are unknown. So you will only buy what you like!

Degree Shows, by weeble on Jun 16, 2007 0:09:33 GMT 1, i'm also going to the Falmouth show - will too try and grab some pics. Went to the UWE graphics show in Brizzle this week, and thought it is was top notch. They have book-bindnging facilities there, some really great ideas for art-realted books and intriguing little pices that were executed extremeley well because of this facility. If you go, look out for the 'Over Coffee' book. I'd buy it tomorrow if it was published! Really beautifully presented and a great idea. Good work!

Degree Shows, by corblimeylimey on Jun 16, 2007 13:14:02 GMT 1, Jam, I'm going for another quick look over the weekend I'll find out about that photograph, I somehow doubt it would be for sale though as you can see it's got smashed glass on the frame and was made to be at that angle, all part of the installation. I'll get the artists name and contact details if I can though.
Discoduster, I know some better drinking places than the Imperial, if you're in Exeter go to the Hour Glass it's a tiny pub but very 'real' or have cocktails in the nearby Hotel Barcelona Kino bar.
You guys that are going to the Falmouth show please try and take some pics.

Degree Shows, by Octopus UK on Jun 16, 2007 16:42:41 GMT 1, I wont the Somerfield's Baked Beans!
Last November I visited a student art show in St Louis and got this silkscreen by an Alex Petrowsky. I like the cartoon imagery of the piece and how the characters are not restricted to a single line/plane.

Degree Shows, by slug on Jun 19, 2007 1:38:52 GMT 1, Thanks to corblimeylimey for posting my work, the degree show was great, fantastic atmosphere, and the party's afterwards were heavy. Sorry to banksy if my security camera insects were similar to yours. Banksy's work has definately influenced my work as has many other artists, i hadn't seen the image posted by ruatcaelum or any other security camera mutant beings created by banksy, but will be exploring other avenues in the future,
and will post some other pieces soon.
