Money Trap, by frank11 on Jul 4, 2007 10:57:05 GMT 1, Okay i know that the very mention of prices of prints puts some peoples backs up. So please bare with me on this it is just i wanted to ask a general question to all the budding art collectors on here. When will the madness end? I can remember POW from back in the day when Banksy prints could be ummed and arred about for weeks and months. Now as we all no it has become a feeding frenzy, over as long as the site holds up in minutes. So the question is, what is the growth potential of a print ie the price? The word on the forums this time last year was that signed stuff would be £2500 to about £4000. Twelve months on and anything at that level is considered cheap. With gallery pricing often taking stuff over the £10,000 mark. So for a buyer now unless they have very deep pockets a Banksy print is an investment, as soon as you start splashing that sort of cash you have to be sure that you are not just pissing it down a drain. So everyone that is buying must feel confident in the market, and long term things are still on the up? So where do people see pricing in a couple of years? Is there a limit in the art world as to what say a Sattchi type would pay for a print? I know everyone says only buy what you like! However with someone like Banksy when we are talking nearly a grand for an unsigned print, i think just to like it is not going to be enough for 95% of people Cheers

Money Trap, by pw on Jul 4, 2007 11:04:05 GMT 1, this has been discussed endlessly in other threads. the bottom line is that noone really knows. I believe that Banksys place in art history is established and therefore his work will always be worth good money. prices could double again in the next 6 months or they could even fall, but art isn't a pension fund and you should only spend what you can afford.

I agree, but the point is who can afford to spend 1000's on a signed print only to see the prices fall? Not many and certainly not me. I love the prints i own and i never thought i would be seeing them as an investment, but when my parnets are lending me cash for the rent, you start to question when should i let go? I think that is why so many signed are available more and more people are reaching there limits of what a print is worth to them! I know one guy who owns about nine signed prints and he lives in a caravan?? So the initial question what could these be worth if Mr Bs popularity continues to grow? Looks like only a few more releaes from POW and then the only way to get the new prints would be through LAZ and he will not be selling signed prints for £500

Just add a 0 to the figures quoted and suits to today’s times!

In all seriousness, it's anyone's guess. Unless you know who is really powering the ups and downs you won't be able to get a grip on the pricing.

Since 2005 it has been the case Suprised it has lasted so long and people are happy to invest when it is still not clear of who the artist is or any history of the artist is known ?
