Is Banksy's art dadaist?, by lardy on Jul 5, 2007 14:53:41 GMT 1, Im no art school theorist, in fact Ive never been to art school but I was reading the other day about the Dadaist movement and it sounded a lot like banksy and some of the more politically inspired street art on here.
Am I barking up the wrong tree?

Is Banksy's art dadaist?, by snorky on Jul 5, 2007 15:02:31 GMT 1, Situationist maybe, but possibly having more in common with Grosz and the Weimar insipred movements.
I would however add the caveat that when you begin to use terms like "movements", you lose sight of the origin of the work itself. Its too easy to add to the bandwagon of movement in an effort to categorise easily.
Or maybe just a Brizzle Doler with too much time on his hands
I do however see how tyou came to see DaDaism as Banksys artistc forefather.

Is Banksy's art dadaist?, by lardy on Jul 5, 2007 15:17:05 GMT 1, Ah right.
I wasnt saying that he would class himself or that anyone should class him as belonging to the movement, merely that there were parralells which could be drawn betwen the atitudes of those who considered themselves to be part of the DD movement and Mr B.
Cheers for the reply though, I shall look up the situationists.

Is Banksy's art dadaist?, by snorky on Jul 5, 2007 15:35:12 GMT 1, The 60's were the natural breeding ground of this type of seditious art - thought depending on who you reference, the situationists and their prankster ilk could be viewed as the bastard children of the Dada & Surreaists.Much of the present anti corporate "movement" can be directly traced back to the German/ French & to a lesser extent, the US protest movements of the period - do you stick Banksy in with the Anti Corporate Movement ?
As we cannot chat to the fellow himself, we have to judge on his production and that would be a resounding yes vote if viewed in isolation. His output does slot in nicely with the late '80s Cauty period from Echo and the Bunnymen ley line hoaxes thro to the KLF £1M firesale and the intensive crop circle industry that grabbed the headlines for a few months.
The teasing prankster can also been see in Dali' surrealism - Much his output in particular was a purely commercial venture , designed to produced a decent income for Dali himself. And we are tolsd that Surrealism is the spawn of Dadaism by academics. The lineage is there for sure.
Keseys well documented merry Pranksters are another branch
Veering across to 1960's Europe, we can also feel a link between between the Dusseldorf of Bueys & Fluxus , the Socialist patients Collective ( which later moprhed into the RAF - who the Tabloids renamed the Baader menihof gruppe) One constant of this period is the spectacle of the "Art happening" - the act which is described as art - We cant dispute that Banksy does tend to favor public Art Happenings.
Eveything is conected and nothing is connected - it depends on who you ask.
