buying from unknown artists, by ell on Jun 25, 2007 19:05:53 GMT 1, theres this artist i discovered on the internet called Lauren Utter. and well i enquired about buying her work and she's offering it to me for $250 + shipping (at least $30). and it comes mounted and framed. So it's going to cost me at least £140. now i really like it but im not sure about spending that much on someone who's unknown and it might not be worth anything. also its quite small, she said about 8x6.
here are my two favourites www.deviantart.com/deviation/52694090/?qo=1&q=by%3Ajadedyouth&qh=sort%3Atime+-in%3Ascraps www.deviantart.com/deviation/52693959/?qo=2&q=by%3Ajadedyouth&qh=sort%3Atime+-in%3Ascraps
so basically i want to know wether i should go for it and spend the money (bear in mind thats half of my months wages and im a poor student). or could i try and bargain (but i dont want to be disrespectful). or should i stay clear.
thanks

buying from unknown artists, by dwight on Jun 25, 2007 19:37:28 GMT 1, Just purchased a large canvas (500squid) a few months back by an artist who probably will never have any fame, but I like it better than all of my others..including my banksy prints... so if you like a piece, buy it..

buying from unknown artists, by jB on Jun 25, 2007 19:56:41 GMT 1, I tend to agree with the majority. It's nice to have art worth something (i.e. Micallef/Banksy/etc.) but in the end it has to give you happiness. I say go for it, and who knows maybe one day if you're lucky this gal will be the next big artist and you'll sell it for 80,000 quid

buying from unknown artists, by poofly on Jun 27, 2007 21:04:04 GMT 1, I bought this at Eyestorms sale last year.
There was info on the site, but I'd never heard any chat about the artist before seeing this piece. Just loved it and in my opinion her best print. Bought for £350 and its definitely one of my favourites.
Popularity can often jade ones appreciation of a piece. When its cheap you know whether you like it or not. when presented with a big price, its like 'should I like this because everyone else does?'
Lucie Bennetts 'red felt tip girl' in case anyone was wondering. I think you can still get it at Opus but I seem to recall they want a grand...
