How to buy from builders and contractors?, by werew on Jun 22, 2007 11:14:13 GMT 1, A few months ago an Amsterdam contractor promised me this great Faile on a building that has been under renovation for years:

I believe that street art belongs on the street. I also believe that it is fair to buy a piece of street art from a contractor if is likely to be destroyed. Of course this won't happen to a Banksy in London, even builders recognize his work by now, but it does happen to most other street art.
So, being a big fan of Faile, the deal we made was that I would get their door when they would take it out to replace it by a new one. Yesterday was my lucky day! I collected my Faile and have been enjoying it all night at home.
Anyone else with experience in dealing with builders, contractors or house owners? Any tips on how to get this right?

It was a bit stressful to have to wait for weeks, with the Faile out on the street...I worried that the contractor would break his promise and sell it to someone else (that happened to me on another occasion).
I even dreamt one night that the f*ing splasher moved from NY to Amsterdam and ruined the piece.

Its not like he's lost out as he obviously doesnt have a clue and youve gained a piece of art you love. And as you say, sometimes its not anything about money when you see a piece you really like. Enjoy your Faile, its a beauty!!!!

When I informed about the Faile she told me that she and her colleagues "were not very attached to the drawing". She got Australian chocolates and tickets for the movies. I gave the guys on the work floor (one of them took the piece out of the door for me) a kind of typical Dutch pie.

I was out on Saturday night in london and ended up in Brick Lane for a curry, sat with a friend gazing out of the window. Bugger me theres a faile attached to the wall opposite. It looked to be onto ply and then onto the wall. Went out for a look and inded this is the way it is. Unfortunately some dimwhit has had a go at removing the paste up by prizing it off the board with the predicted consequence. No point in 'liberating' it as it is so mashed up but a surprise none the less.
Nice work werew by the way.

Sounds good to me, It would have ended up in a skip anyway. I am concerned however that Ive never heard of the Currency "Dutch pie" In our old base coffee could have bought you anything from a Couple of Biro's all the way up to a tank depending on the size of the Jar. Do you think Laz would except a Dutch Pie for an original like yours?
