Google checkout vs PayPal ??, by Pure Evil on Jun 21, 2007 11:39:11 GMT 1, Google has launched a competitor to Paypal and paypal are mighty pissed off about it apparently.. I just opened a google checkout account... has anybody had a try with it yet ?? It seems like it could be quite a good thing... I know a lot of people who have had total nightmares with Paypal and apparently google checkout arent charging fees until 2008.... which is pretty damn nice of them...
"Congratulations! Now that you have signed up for Google Checkout, you are on your way to selling more and spending less.

Google checkout vs PayPal ??, by Adamski on Jun 21, 2007 11:47:33 GMT 1, Finally, some competition for the Paypal dog. Hopefully it will reduce their charges, although Ebay will be doing just about everything to stop Google from taking revenue off their auctions.

Until 2008, Google Checkout merchants can process their Google Checkout sales for free.
From January 1st 2008, for every £1 you spend on AdWords, you can process £10 in sales for free through Google Checkout. For example, if you spent £1,000 on AdWords last month, this month you can process £10,000 in sales at no cost. The more you spend to promote your business through AdWords, the more you save on transaction processing fees with Google Checkout.
If you exceed your free transaction processing for the month or you do not advertise with AdWords at all, you will only be charged 1.5% + £0.15 per transaction

Google checkout vs PayPal ??, by tadghostal on Jun 22, 2007 1:42:03 GMT 1, If you value the notion of privacy, avoid all things google. Each and every program created by google, that you use (whether it is desktop search, internet search, gmail, or any other internet based application) collects all the data and associates it with your account. Essentially, google is a giant honeypot that attracts users due to its "sweetness," yet that is not where its real usefulness or potential lies.

I, for one, don't trust google at all.

Google checkout vs PayPal ??, by dgb133 on Jun 22, 2007 2:01:26 GMT 1, I don't trust paypal any more than I trust google. Paypal can be an absolute night mare and hijack your money. It's happened to many. And so if you gotta pick one I'm going with the one that charges less, or nothing at all.
I use google checkout and recommend it. After 2008 fees will be about 3%? I think. About 1% less than paypal. Free right now and I've saved myself several hundred dollars this way. But be warned it is against ebay policy to use google checkout. (Can anyone say class action lawsuit?) So don't say anything about google in your auction or it could get pinched. Just say that ypou can accept credit cards via a merchant account.
Another warning, checkout works in the US, Canada and the UK, but it still doesn't work in a lot of countries.

Google checkout vs PayPal ??, by dgb133 on Jun 22, 2007 2:09:02 GMT 1, About Google
I know this is an issue but to googles credit, when the US government requested and or subpoenad several tech companies for internet records (probably related to 9/11? I unfortunately can't remember the specifics.) But google was the only company that did not roll over and hand the records over to the government. They in fact fought the government in court. Sory I can't remember specifics or have a link but this is true.
They also when they went public allowed everyday people the ability to purchase shares before they went public. Instead of just offering it to institutional investors and the super rich. So I respect that.
I also like that they're taking it to monolith Microsoft.
But yeah, the privacy issue understandably can bug some people out. I take it with a grain of salt myself and really don't think they're up to anything bad. All I have to say. But that said, I am careful about things online and spread out my activity online over several anonymous email accounts.

Google checkout vs PayPal ??, by tadghostal on Jun 22, 2007 7:25:35 GMT 1, Maybe so. Doesn't change the fact that once Google went public, two companies which are the public faces of the NSA and CIA bought heavy stakes, and immediately after that, Google began implementing serious hardware and software upgrades.
Ever heard of TIA (Total Information Awareness)? DARPA was forced to drop the program, but it was seamlessly transfered to the NSA. Its the same deal with Facebook, and several other social networking sites. If you don't believe me that's fine, but I'd recommend you do two things: Actually read the EULA's and think carefully about why they are claiming certain extreme rights regarding your data, and then find out who has invested early money (venture capital), and who currently sits on the boards. It will make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end. Its up to you, but for me--I'd rather spend a couple of bucks and make them earn my data instead of handing it over on a silver platter.
Profiling and vast data storage of my personal habits scares the sh*t out of me.
