pie face - bargain?, by verbalkint on Jun 22, 2007 2:05:45 GMT 1, When you look at some of the prices acheived by other artists in the southerbys sale, do you think that the banksys are a bargain? I do. there is so much scope for values rising for his work, they have nowhere near peaked in my opinion. I mean look at hirsts originals, i suppose that is a good comparrison as hirst releases prints in similar circles and at the moment banksys prints are outstripping the prices for hirsts, but the gulf in value between hirst prints and originals is massive. A banksy kate moss print could fetch £40,000 at auction and yet his originals are only 4 times more!
and look at lot 17 from the auction. a canvas paited blue, thats it.
Compare that to Damien hirsts 'the soul on jacobs ladder' print, a limited edition of 55 sells with difficulty for £30,000, yet his original spot paintings go for millions.
and look at lot 17 from the auction. a canvas paited blue, thats it. a blue canvas. seriously. by yves klein. it went for £1,028,000! Its amusing to see how they try to big up a blue canvas in the description, but if someone is willing to pay a million for that then im sure that it wont be long until 2 people are willing to pay a million for a banksy
I think the people buying original banksys now are making very wise investments, in about a year we will all be talking about the first million pound banksy
but i might be wrong! (i usually am)
what do you all think

I think someone got a bargain, but I also think there's a difference in the Banksy market where the people who would be able to pay £500k+ can't and those that could aren't interested... yet! Once the higher end really picks up on him then the prices will go nuts forever!

pie face - bargain?, by cashman on Jun 22, 2007 9:57:10 GMT 1, people need to get into perspective, most of the artists at sothebys are either dead or made a massive controbution to the art scene over the last 50 years. Hirst was one of the main players at the brit art/ sensations exhibitions in the late 90's. To expect Banksy to be finacially competing with artists like that is a joke
