Care of Prints...., by simongoff on Jun 21, 2007 13:42:37 GMT 1, Humidity........
I have a couple of prints which I 'share' with my Dad and he has now moved to France and it is fairly humid, I am worried as the prints may get ruined, any tips for general care as we are talking Micallef and Banksy here.........
He loves the Micallef FF but now wants a JD if anyone has one they want to get rid of.....
Cheers

Care of Prints...., by Strange Al on Jun 22, 2007 8:44:27 GMT 1, Simon - as you know, humidity can be the cause of real problems for prints and other paper artworks. Museums go out of their way to create suitable environments for their works - generally, I believe this is between 16-19c and around 50% humidity. From what I've read if humidity gets to around 70% that can start causing problems with condensation and ultimately mould developing.
I'm guessing it's not going to be possible for your dad to control the environment at a constant 50% humidity.
Good framing and hanging is obviously the absolutely key thing for prints in unusual climates. It's all the usual things: conservation materials, print framed away from the glass, air circulating around the print, frame properly sealed, hung out of direct sunlight, etc. I'd go and see a Guild Approved framer and chat it through with them if you're particularly concerned.
Ultimately, I can't imagine that the humidity in France is so bad that you can't come up with a solution you guys are comfortable with.

Care of Prints...., by ala399 on Jun 22, 2007 8:45:59 GMT 1, Yo can get sealed frames where no moisture get in. Artrepublic do them, and I'm sure many better framer offer the service. I doubt if heat on its own damages the print.
Good luck.

Have you seen the pics of Beej's studio in Thailand and how he frames his prints? I reckon humidity is the last thing he thinks about
