I wouldnt put it on ebay though, if I was thinking about buying it I'd want to check prov etc and wouldnt want to be rushed into.
So in short - no idea how much its worth.

However this is Banksy we're talking about, but it would suffer the same as other books, signed but no proof of authenticity. Your friend should treat it as it is, a thank you for a letter.

Is this book "Banging Your Head Against a Brick Wall"? Are you sure it's a first edition? It may instead be an open edition, as with the two subsequent mini-books sold by POW, "Existencilism" and "Cut It Out".
Does your friend have the original envelope or package the book came in? Were his name and address details written by hand? If so, how does the writing match up with Banksy's signature at the time?
Also, what is the date and location on the postmark? A 2001 date with a Hackney postmark location would add a bit of weight in favour of the book's authenticity.
However, this is a very long way from establishing any proof. Without that, the only true value the book has is sentimental. I would follow slowmo's suggestion of simply treating the book as a personal "cheers - nice one" message from an artist your friend appreciates.
Thank you notes are not meant to be sold. In my opinion, this would negate the very act your friend was initially being thanked for! I suspect he has already reached that conclusion.
