Q for Computer Expert/Geek..., by discoduster on Jun 12, 2007 11:39:00 GMT 1, Regarding the next Banksy "bun fight"
Will it hamper my (or anyone else's) chances of getting in if you have a slow PC and connection.
I never seem to get any luck when popular tickets go onsale so maybe I think know the answer already .
I've just got rid of Norton which made it a bit quicker but not as much as I'd like.
Any tips/info would be gratefully recieved.

Q for Computer Expert/Geek..., by Fearkiller on Jun 12, 2007 12:00:25 GMT 1, hi,
It isn´t your computer or your internet connection *sitting here in front of a Dual 3 GHz Xeon and Multiple Gigabit Uplinks to the internet*.
The problem is the server´s POW use to host their shop and the lot of people trying to get a print.
You could donate POW some more RAM and better CPU´s
greetz

Never heared of that, but will mention it to the nice man who comes round to fix my PC every time I blow it up. I forced my ipod connecter into the wrong port the other day (BANG!)

I've got a 13 month old Packard Bell Bog standard home PC package Inter4. 80gb (paid about £900) with AOL as my ISP.
Was hoping that would be ample

Q for Computer Expert/Geek..., by chunkymcfunky on Jun 12, 2007 13:00:39 GMT 1, My broadband went down an hour before the Morons bunfight.
I dialed up and managed to get a Sepia.
As mentioned, the blockage is at the POW end, so connection speed shouldn't matter

not a particularly old machine - like others here are saying nothing to do with your machine...
altho if its generally slow, maybe worth 'tidying' the pc removing programs u don't need, doing a disk defrag, etc etc.. extra RAM will help, as will a fast Hard Drive, better graphics card, its a rocky road though cos there's always something better just around the corner...

Q for Computer Expert/Geek..., by themightyreds on Jun 12, 2007 13:17:27 GMT 1, There are 3 Banksy fans (me included) in my office and we were all on similar machines (macs) trying all afternoon for both Applause & Morons on our 10mb network connection. All of us had the same frustrating errors and i didn't even know i had got one (Applause) till later that night when a confirmation email was sent to my home email address. My non-technical guess is that its just pure jammy luck if you even get to the checkout with one, let alone manage to get one ordered!!

Q for Computer Expert/Geek..., by dotdot on Jun 12, 2007 13:27:30 GMT 1, If you're at work on a T1 connection - you should at least see the site. If you're on BB which most likey will not be T1 you may not get a connection - timeout.
I was at home using BB - no connection for hours. Was connected to gmail - having a mate trying to get access - he could all see the site - though it was....
like "It's a Knockout" - staggering around with one print in the basket then nothing it's gone - kind of thing...
The site couldn't handle the load - we've all done this one / subject to death - the same will happen again - it is unavoidable if they try to do what they did last time - without a major upgrade to their site licensing of asp .. blah blah... but then if it only happens with banksy prints - then perhaps they might just not be inclined to - their choice their site.
cheers

Q for Computer Expert/Geek..., by corblimeylimey on Jun 12, 2007 13:53:14 GMT 1, As mentioned before a bit of extra RAM should speed your machine up (won't help with POW though)
Try here www.crucial.com/uk/ easy to find the exact memory you need and pretty cheap too, just bought 512Mb Ram for my wifes laptop for only £14.

As mentioned, I got a Sepia Morons off a 56k dial-up (almost #62
The bottleneck is at the server end. It can only handle so many concurrent connections. When the server becomes overloaded its handling of these connections becomes unpredictable.
The fact that your friend could see the site was probably due to caching, either locally or through a webcache (probably without him knowing about it)
If you get all the way through the buying process it is because you got lucky in hitting the server when it had one of its connections open, and it got to the end without running out of memory or CPU.
In that respect it truely is a lottery.
Your internet connection speed has absolutley no relevance as to whether or not you will be successful if the server is having the shit kicked out of it.
Not defending the way it is handled, but don't think that running to the office for the next scramble will increase your chances

Q for Computer Expert/Geek..., by Lord Lucas Roham on Jun 12, 2007 17:57:19 GMT 1, I disagree with the above to some extent.
Yes the POW server is where the major bottleneck is at, but in order to be able to refresh 10+ windows(ie & firefox) ever 5 seconds and reload page after page you will need a DECENT pc spec and web connection.
Your PC still needs to do some processing of data and your net connection still needs to bring you that data.

Goffy' I'm a total ludite when it comes to this kind of thing. I've got a conection through talk talk at the moment and think that AOL are involved somewhere along the line. What would be a decent ISP ?
