Who's the Artist??, by dmandpenfold on Jun 3, 2007 16:59:22 GMT 1, ..I know Damien Hirst has done plenty of work and lots by his own hand, but as i understand much of it these days is produced by his 'team' from his ideas, and this raises an interesting point..
so my question is....If i (or any of you lot for that matter) had an idea, or many and got them commissioned, who is the artist?? Do we need to have put in years of graft as an artist first, or is the art in the idea and not necessariy the execution..or is it both..?

Who's the Artist??, by RetroCanvas on Jun 3, 2007 17:05:04 GMT 1, Much of my work is commissioned, meaning that my customers are the artists in a way.
If it's your idea, the labour can be done by someone else.
We (retrocanvas) are usually given an idea from a customer, we then expand on it, change it, redesign it etc. So we'd then take over the label as artist/designer.
Hope that makes sense, I'd like to hear other views too.

Who's the Artist??, by dave313perry on Jun 3, 2007 17:13:23 GMT 1, When it comes to Screenprint much of the art you could argue is in the hands of the designers and screenprinters.
The original concept and visual is obviously that of the artist but the exicution, detail, colour matching and actual quality of the printing is down to the print house, and it is factors like these which can turn a good image into a superb print...I.E the quality and standard that black rat press have set with heavy stock, thick inks etc etc....
Where as when it comes to originals and commisioned works 'Retro' has it spot on!
