How do i make stencils, by ell on Jun 3, 2007 11:01:45 GMT 1, i make stencils to paint on clothes so i dont know if its different for painting but basically:
on computer
1) get an image you like
2) using photoshop or another image editing programe change it into black and white and then play with the contrast and brightness so its just black and white i.e. no grey tones.
3) print and put on cardboard either just like tape onto cardboard and cut or draw around in pencil and then turn over and go over the lines to the pencil goes on cardboard. then go over the pencil marks on the cardboard(i do this because then can change a bit if i need to on the cardboard )
4) cut out using stanley knife. like cut out all the black bits.
freehand
draw your image and cut out
i use cardboard that is fairly thick and strong but if you want detail dont use the corrogated stuff.
hope that helps a bit and im sorry if its really different for graffiti or whatever you wanna do but it works well for clothing!

The website is down at the moment, but try back every few days at www.stencilrevolution.com and look in the tutorials section of the forum, there's loads of good info there, complete walkthroughs of what to do on photoshop/the gimp (its an open source version of photoshop so its free, I use it and its never failed me).
