LA yay or nay? , by thwaites on Jun 5, 2007 13:40:00 GMT 1, so notitle and I are heading off to travel the world in a few months time and are finalising our plans at the mo. we are thinking about heading to california and checking out LA and san fran but might skip it and go to Bali instead... can anyone recommend some good sights/attractions/museums/fun times in CA to help us make our decision?
we are a terribly indecisive pair.
thanks all

thwaites...not sure what your travel plans are but CA as a state is pretty cool, it has the ability to satisfy any travellers needs, from the surf to the scenery, there's tonnes to see and do. Napa valley was great fun...hiring a car and driving down from SF to Mexico is always an adventure.
Good news with Mexico is that whatever happens in Mexico stays in Mexico...for the most part.

hahah you should have seen his face when he read that!!
im well up for it though! (i dont think he wants to come anymore...)
thanks guys, im swaying more and more towards it myself, but notitle did point out that there is unlikely to be many people from bali on here to big it up in opposition. but we are doing thailand and fiji so i think LA would be a good combination, something a bit different. love the idea of driving down to mexico or to vegas though.. def something to think about.
what about galleries and museums? anything good? if there is a micallef exhibition in LA coming up we might try and time it with that, although we will want to spend a few pennies there and then would be living in a box for the rest of the trip.
oh and can anyone recommend good-but cheapish hotels in LA?
thanks much

LA yay or nay? , by ell on Jun 5, 2007 14:17:19 GMT 1, i did the same as Paulah, was brilliant fun. we drove from LA to vegas and then to San Fran. we went through the grand canyon (on hellicopter), bryce canyon, death valley etc it was brilliant. san fransisco is amazing, you have got to go to Alcatraz and cycle over golden gate bridge. theres like a drive round tour where you drive around and theres sign posts telling you where to go, that was quite good. erm so much to do, its an amazing city. LA is pretty cool too, its crazy and exciting. we went to univeral studios which was quite good, saw hollywood sign, went down like rodeo drive and melrose avenue. ermm hollywood boulevard is a must.
was a great holiday. in SF i also went to 924 Gilman St which was a really cool place.

Thailand is gorgeous, or at least it was when I last went, I've only passed through Bali and would imagine that if you've done one it pretty much satisfies the 'beach/nature' holiday you're after.

LA yay or nay? , by Curley on Jun 5, 2007 15:55:40 GMT 1, Bali is amazing as long as you get off the tourist trail. ;D There is great surfing on some fairly amazing beaches. Its cheap to live once you are there and the locals are very friendly.
How can you beat a place like this...
This is the hot springs at Batur. The walk takes hours but worth it when you get there. Cook your boiled egg in the hot sand..

LA yay or nay? , by goffy on Jun 5, 2007 16:17:36 GMT 1, First of all give Vegas a miss. It is like Blackpool but without the class. L.A. is O.K. Avoid anywhere with a two drink minimum. Coming from England it sounds easy enough, but it can be quite painful. I once went to the Comedy Store on Sunset which was a two drink minimum, and despite there being about 12 comedians on it was horrible. I hadn't had so much fun since my father died. And it was damn expensive. The Comedy Store that is, not my fathers funeral. The most fun I had in LA was taking acid in the Universal Studios theme park. San Francisco is great. Bali sounds nice.

LA yay or nay? , by a4mnt on Jun 5, 2007 17:05:33 GMT 1, Bali, definitely. The place is beautiful and the people are some of the best i've met anywhere in the world. They are still thankful that westerners come (after the original bombings years ago) and make a big fuss of you. Its cheap, theres lots to and other islands to jump to like Lombok (for the Gili isles) or further onto Komodo for the dragons (albeit a bit commercialised now).
How long have you got?
What about Fiji? Are you staying there long. I can recommend somewhere nice but very much for backpackers on the main island, but ideally you'd want to go to some of the little island clusters.

I wasn't suggesting that it wasn't as safe as anywhere... i'm a firm believer that lightning doesn't strike twice.
Just saying that my experience was... got there, got to the pub, got blown up!

LA yay or nay? , by Ågent ßacardi on Jun 5, 2007 21:36:12 GMT 1, LA definitely! (Yes, I'm biased)
I can bring you on a Banksy tour! ;D Universal Studios, Disneyland, Six Flags Magic Mountain (roller coaster heaven)... especially Disneyland. And Beverly Hills. And of course, Hollywood. It doesn't get any more American than that!! Gorgeous beaches in Santa Monica and Malibu, and the world famous Muscle Beach, a.k.a. Venice Beach. Do some research on these places online, see the pictures. Each place has a unique character of its own.
Plus if you come to LA, I can give you advice and directions and hotel recommendations (based on location) and stuff. Tell me what you wanna be close to in LA, and I'll tell you where's a good place to stay. Good luck finding someone like that in Bali!
As for Las Vegas, I'd highly recommend it. It's really not bad at all, in fact, there's nowhere quite like it anywhere in the world. You just need to know where to go! Just a 1-hour flight from LA (you can fly for waayyy under US$100 if you book early and know where to look), or a 4-5 hour drive. FREE DRINKS 24/7 on the casino floors!!! And of course, you can get married by Elvis after you two have had wayyyy too much to drink! Bali doesn't have that!
San Francisco is also about an hours' flight away from LA, or a VERY scenic 6-hour drive along the Pacific coast. Gorgeous city with real character, and definitely somewhere I would highly recommend. A place called Haight/Ashbury is like stuck in the psychedelic 60's, very hippie and very quaint. And there's the usual tourist staples, like the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, the famous cable cars, and the world's largest Chinatown.
Okay, I've rambled enough, but feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. So when are you planning to do this big trip?

LA yay or nay? , by thwaites on Jun 5, 2007 21:49:47 GMT 1, i was waiting for you to jump in with your sales pitch Jay!
thanks for that love, you certainly sell it well! you guys are making this difficult for us!
it does seem like there is a lot to do in california, lots of different places to go and things to do and see, which seems to compliment our plans to laze around in the sun and do nothing in fiji and thailand. it is a tough one though as Curley has sold bali to me just with those pictures alone! it really looks stunning
we are planning to set off in mid-late august i think and stay until end of november or so. so we do still have a while to make decisions.
if we do go to LA you will probably regret bigging it up though jay as no doubt we will bug and bug you for tips and advice!
thanks again everyone, ill + respect you all (very slowly as we can only do it once an hour!)

LA yay or nay? , by ell on Jun 5, 2007 22:20:45 GMT 1, lesbianwednesdays - i didnt get married in vegas, sorry i see how you can see i said that but i didnt lol. sorry!
this is copied from somewhere else sorry its so long!
i went to Chiang Mai up north and a small-ish island down south called Ko Samui.
Chiang Mai is a really cool place, theres a really cool market there, its massive!! we got little rickshaw things everywhere or the red 'buses', they are like truck thing haha. we made friends with a taxi driver who took us on day trips for a very reasonable price (ask someone in the hotel, they all have contacts) we went into the like rainforest and saw elephants and rode them and stuff, AMAZING. great food there, you gotta eat the from where you see the locals eating from. even the little food stalls on the market, they are great and have really nice snacks etc.
Ko Samui is a really cool little island but was just starting to get really touristy when we went which was like 3/4 years ago. great night life! lol again we made friends with a taxi driver who took us on a day trip around the island and saw a massive gold buddha, was amazing. erm we went snorkling and stuff, beautiful beaches. we also went on a canoeing and boat trip all around where they filmed 'the beach' its really cool.
also get loadsa massages and beauty treatments, they are amazing and sooo cheap. eat where you see the locals eating, we went to some amaizng really really cheap places and the food there was 10x better than the proper restaurants we went to.
one night we went out (i was only 13/14) and we had the best time. we went all through the red light district and ended up in this gay bar where there was a drag night going on. my aunt got chatted up by a women. there was a huge fat man, like 25st. sing 'like a virgin' and in a ballet costume and then he did the splits!! hahahahahaha
its the most amazing place, the people are the best, they are sooo nice and the culture and country is beautiful. i definately want to go back there, its soo cool and its really quite safe aswell. its got a bit of a bad reputation but we went as 2 women and a teenage girl and we were soo safe and were never at one point worried.
i thought of more stuff haha.
things are really cheap there.
in Chiang Mai there are loads of buddhist temples, they are really cool and interesting. ask around in the place you are staying for day trips and stuff. we asked around and this waiter knew a guy who was a tazi driver and you coudl like hire him for a certain amount of time. we paid him a days wages and he showed us the best places in the city and to the best temples and he told us stories etc. so ask around. also taxis are really cheap. for the whole day for 3 people it was like £10 ($20) super cheap.
have lots of coconut drinks, delishious, in Ko samui they litrally climbed a tree and got you a fresh one.
on the elephant day trip we did we also went to a hill tribe village which was really cool and interesting but they will try and sell you stuff. also to an orchard farm, silk factory, wood carving factory and a laquer factory. they call them factory but its like a hut with 5 people working there. the guides must get commission but there is always a shop there, its a bit fake and set up for tourists but still interesting and really nice stuff to buy. we also went to national parks, really interesting. the guides are so helpful and such beautiful people.
in Chiang Mai we stayed in the Amari, really nice place and in Ko samui the Nora (nice but when we went it was new and bit unorganised, also one of most expensive ones but still cheap compared to uk lol) and we stayed at Chaweng Buri resort, also a nice place.
on the Ko samui say trip we also went to Grandfather and Grandmother rocks which well look like genitals haha.
seriously i could talk forever about my holidays

LA yay or nay? , by wezzley on Jun 5, 2007 22:37:03 GMT 1, Chang Mai is cool - stay within in the old city walls for sure, full of temples & little lanes...loads of guesthouses - just pick & choose when u get there..the Market on a Sunday is an absolute must. Get a minibus north to Pai for the mountain/jungle experince, cool little arty village in the mountains full of people who only meant to visit for a week or so ...
I'd forget Samui now - unless you like brits on the piss & mc donalds, tesco, boots in your face on holiday - get a cab from Samui airport strait to the ferry port & get the 20 minyte boat to Koh Pha Ngan..steer clear of haad rin in the south of the island altogether - unless you like the samui thing.....which to be fair loads of people do. - but not me without question head for Tong Nai Pan in the north east of the island- twin bayed jungle backed white sand clear calm sea.....perfect ballance of everythig...plenty of cheap bungalow resorts from basic to luxury & aircon, just turn up & walk down the beach & stay where u fancy no need to book ahead. tust me on this one - I just spent 10 weeks on the same beach.. ....
the amount of people I met there who had only left a few days at the end of their travelling/hols that wished they'd come there at the start and stayed the whole time...!
oh & bangkok airways do 'sector' passes - they dont advertise it but if you call & ask you get 4 journeys for the price of 2 - so you can do bkk - to chang mai - to samui - & back to bangkok...oh & you can book ahead then not turn up and just call later & rebook the flight...there sorted.

LA yay or nay? , by Ågent ßacardi on Jun 5, 2007 22:59:44 GMT 1, i was waiting for you to jump in with your sales pitch Jay! thanks for that love, you certainly sell it well! you guys are making this difficult for us! it does seem like there is a lot to do in california, lots of different places to go and things to do and see, which seems to compliment our plans to laze around in the sun and do nothing in fiji and thailand. it is a tough one though as Curley has sold bali to me just with those pictures alone! it really looks stunning we are planning to set off in mid-late august i think and stay until end of november or so. so we do still have a while to make decisions. if we do go to LA you will probably regret bigging it up though jay as no doubt we will bug and bug you for tips and advice! thanks again everyone, ill + respect you all (very slowly as we can only do it once an hour!)
And what makes you think you can't laze around in the sun and nothing in LA? Umm, hello, have you watched Baywatch? Filmed right here in sunny southern California (Malibu Beach, to be exact)! You, too, can don on a red swimsuit and run along the beach in slow motion! ;D
So if you do come here, don't worry about asking for tips and advice and such, I'll help you out as much as I can. However, I will be out of the country between August 20th to September 5th, so if you come during that time, you're on your own! ;D
