it's a nice idea having a forum for each artist, but it's shit that you have all those domain fees. there must be some way you can generate a small revenue from ads on here?
mind you, i think most people talk about artists other than banksy here. e.g. pure evil is on this forum more than the PE fourm. it's a hassle to have to switch from one to the other to follow anything. although this forum definately focuses on banksy, i class it as a street & contemporary art forum. i'd imagine having different sections for each artist / art style on one forum would be a lot more user friendly. but i'm not a web guy, and i'm sure it's been spoken about before.

We get a bit back from the ArtRepublic advert, so that helps a little So if anyone is planning to buy online from ArtRepublic please click on the advert to make your order thanks! ;D
I think the problem with having just one forum with all the artists on would be that it would never really be focused enough Some of the artists covered by the forums are very different, and the sort of people into the work can have very different tastes and styles I have wondered that in time this forum could adapt into a general Art forum ;D

ads by google, by Aza on Apr 18, 2007 15:13:56 GMT 1, just saw this on the vbulletin site:
Can I import posts/threads/members from other forum software?
We currently offer import utilities for more than 70 competitive products.
vBulletin 3.5.x
The vB3 import system is called ImpEx and currently can support the conversion of the following boards to vBulletin: IPB (2) phpBB 2.0.x Infopop eve IPB (1.1 -1.3) IPB (2.x) wBB (2) Ubb classic (6.3 - 6.7) Open Topic & Ubb.x DCFm (DCForum+ MySQL backend) YaBB SE Ubb threads vBulletin (2) vBulletin (3.0, 3.5 and 3.6) Snitz (MySQL) Ikonboard MySQL XMB CuteCast ThwBoard (3) SMF DiscusWare (file based - 4.00.x) vB (1.0 RC1) YaBB - Gold openBB dulexportal Digiposts Phorum Fusetalk WebWiz Ezboard (posts only, not members accounts) many more...
so i guess you could.... so you would need hosting, then set up vbulletin, import the database, set up your own adsense not as simple as that though i guess1

ads by google, by gbh on Apr 18, 2007 16:42:28 GMT 1, I've been telling you for ages to move to Vbulletin!
Not sure if proboards would give access to the raw database so as it could be exported for import into another product though...end result, that means setting up users from scratch or everyone re-registering.
Silky: In the Proboards admin panel, is there any applets there that might mention anything about export DB or something like that?
Costs in general:
Vbulletin forum software - $80 a year or $160 outright with a $30 a year subscription for updates
Hosting: Probably not so cheap for a forum of this size and volume, picture hosting is only a small part of the bigger picture. The concern here will be CPU usage. I'm willing to help/sponsor/whatever/we can work something out.
Install and ongoing technical admin: A fair bit of time and work to be done here, again willing to help out.
Then you need to set up adsense, etc..not a big deal. Might be a good idea to set up different artist sub forums in this single installation also. Optional: get someone to skin the forum as opposed to the vanilla scheme.
It might be painful to do this install exercise, but I believe every day you don't do it means more pain when the inevitable comes. Vbulletin will give a lot greater control over users and users with "recurring issues" as well as vastly improved functionality and features.
I could get it set up and then you could take a couple of weeks etc to set it up nicely before d-day of the big move?
drop me a mail on judd at globalskunkworks.com and we can go over some finer details if you like.

There are enough people who visit here that are creative, maybe have a print run every now and then in a new thread and then have proceeds going to the artist with a commission paid to cover hosting costs for this site perhaps?
Any volunteers?

ads by google, by gbh on Apr 18, 2007 17:23:53 GMT 1, for longer term users (all will lose their post count in a move like that) you could create a list and add them in as power users in vbulletin, there are loads of options on how the "status" representations could be replicated on a new forum.
Have been doing some research and unless I'm wrong, there looks to be no straightforwrad way to backup/export proboards for import to another forum system. An example thread (there are LOADS of these threads out there as plenty of people try to jump off proboards when the forum gets to a decent size) www.vbulletin.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-148301.html

Agree Curley, rather than breaking it up to lots of forums, which are costly in terms of domain names, you could have sections of this site dealing with specific artists and other sections that deal in lot's of different artists.
The thing that binds it all together will be genre, which is headed by Banksy.

It looks like something you've been putting allot of time into and you might really regret giving proboards so much control on your site. If you don't own the means of production you'll always be a pawn in some else's game. Reclaim the forum.

ads by google, by finsburyparkranger on Apr 18, 2007 18:34:48 GMT 1, Oh yeah silky, I was also thinking of another good addition to this web site. I think it would be really good if everyone could 'register' their prints on-line. So you would list all the print runs and everyone can claim ownership to what they own and chose to tick the 'interested in offers section' or 'interested in swap section'. This would help prevent fraud and allow forum buyers and sellers to see whats on offer from each other. I would always prefer to do business with a prominent forum member than an ebay stranger. Of course no one has to register their ownership but people might find it very handy to do so, a little pic of the number could be included as well maybe. Just an idea.

I now want Agent Barcardi to change his name to Sheriff Barcardi to go with his new shiny badge and i'll be happy. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Hahaha! Nah, at least here in the US, an (FBI) agent is better than a sheriff. Why would that make you happy anyway, curley? You like a man in uniform? JUST KIDDING!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D

It seems a lot easier to navigate than Pro-Boards. I'd support anything that keeps this forum going from strength to strength. If cash flow is a problem in the short term then I am certain that a core of regular users would have no problem in paypal ing ยฃ to reregister the domain names while a new site is put together.

there is nothing worse than being under someone elses control! best when its your own ship to run
as andrew suggested i am sure you will get support with this

Interestingly enough the other Banksy board, the E-bay forum have run into problems ( getting the bay to play ball )and are now on Pro Boards, they're called Art Candy, you'll have to do a Google for them as the light side have come over to the dark side, their words not mine! whilst I imagine Silky would welcome competition I am not going to do their advertising for them.
