Anyone bothering to vote tomorrow?, by tadghostal on May 2, 2007 19:26:52 GMT 1, Just think in the States if everyone had actually made their vote count George Bush may never have got to power, the count was that close in the end. Every vote can make a difference. Vote for who you like but dont waste it.
Not sure if you noticed, but Al Gore was elected President by the voters. George's brother Jeb happened to be the Governor in Florida, who appointed the Attorney General (who happened to work on both his campaign and George's) and she validated the Florida vote in Bush's favor by a margin of several thousand votes. This only happened by disallowing more than 150k black votes. Oh, and it also appears the Ohio voting machines were tampered with and that it was a rigged election.
The voters did speak. Bush was never elected. Few took the time to notice though. Contrary to popular belief, the US is supposed to be a Republic--a nation ruled by law, where all men are equal (as in, none are above the law), and with a *servant government* working at the will and bequest of the people. Sure seems as though we've got an authoritarian lot that regards itself as our "rulers" though. And entirely above the law. Its ridiculous.
Anyways, carry on!

Anyone bothering to vote tomorrow?, by finsburyparkranger on May 2, 2007 19:51:35 GMT 1, It reminds me of a classic piece of graffiti that managed to last decades in simple white paint on a wall in north London, N8.... "VOTE NO".

Anyone bothering to vote tomorrow?, by misteraitch on May 2, 2007 21:22:32 GMT 1, ah..the joy of politics.....
Personally, I think anyone who actually wants to be a politician should be barred from the position ;D
And as for spoiling the vote - you're not not wrong there CBL! Apathy doesn't get you anywhere - they don't listen if you don't vote but a mass of spoilt ballots will highlight the inadeqaucies of the system and make them realise it just doesn't work. It's certainly better than the mindset of 'well it doesn't work so why bother?'
I'll be donning my cherry reds and going out to vote sensibly this time around, but that's cos the B(ig) N(elly) P(oofters) have been doing the rounds in their ice-cream van blasting out 'Land of Dope and Tory' to the ignorant populous, and I'm buggered if I'm having those ignorant bigots getting a foothold in my town - anyway it's the chance for a fight ;D
Ballots to the Lot of Them!

Anyone bothering to vote tomorrow?, by insite on May 3, 2007 9:30:22 GMT 1, I agree with the three posts above, you should be arsed to vote, but having said that I've deliberately spoilt many ballots due to the pathetic system we have and in protest against all the parties. Spoiling your vote is not a waste as it is counted as a vote, if you're in a ward that is and always has a massive majority to one party and you're against that party, then voting for the opposition is a waste, spoil you vote and that takes a vote away from everyone. If enough votes are spoilt the media will see this as a vote against the system, politicians will have to take more notice of a large percentage of spoilt votes than a low turn out.
I never realised they counted spoilt ballots, so thanks to you there'll be one more today. Now I just need to think of an amusing way of spoiling it.

Anyone bothering to vote tomorrow?, by rolyateel on May 3, 2007 10:25:51 GMT 1, sent my postal ballot last week my mate emailed me this yesterday...
'"On its world, the people are people. The leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people." "Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy." "I did," said Ford. "It is." "You mean they actually vote for the lizards?" "Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course." "But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?" "Because if they didn't vote for a lizard," said Ford, "the wrong lizard might get in."' . - Douglas Adams, 'So Long And Thanks For All The Fish'

Anyone bothering to vote tomorrow?, by danvnuk on May 3, 2007 13:31:01 GMT 1, Got to agree with some of the posts here - if you don't vote, then you can't complain......and I love complaining ;D
Round my way - The Council is dominated by the Conservatives.....now, this wouldn't necessarily be bad if they were competent....But....
Something really wound me up that one of them said recently with regard to building a whopping great Block of Flats in a seaside conservation area....
"The Constituents I represent are against the flats being built,...but...I feel I have to vote on the matter on how I feel personally about it - not how my constituents feel"
He voted for it - (but it got overruled anyway).....
But wait a sec? doesnt he represent his constituents? Isnt that what he was elected to do? Im guessing someone has been taking backhanders from developers.

Anyone bothering to vote tomorrow?, by worlddomination on May 4, 2007 12:32:36 GMT 1, Fuck me I didn't think one little comment would cause such a stir, only found out last night when I was down at elms and a good friend of mine told me. maybe I should explain my view point. When I say who gives a fuck what i meant was is that this is an art forum am I wrong,?so the posting should have been put on a political forum board instead and leave this free to discuss art, and yes I know art and politics and messages through art etc, but it was a straightforward statement made about voting, ok guys.
