Do you think Art Forums influencing sales?, by slowmo on Feb 26, 2007 15:35:38 GMT 1, Just interested to know. I am convinced we have little effect, other than when you post someone you like who someone else finds interesting too. Just don't feel this forum could drive the kind of sales in artists we are currently seeing alone (people keep saying on the Baldwin thread it is down to forums on his success, I don't subscribe to that).
Opinions greatly accepted

Do you think Art Forums influencing sales?, by ABC on Feb 26, 2007 16:06:07 GMT 1, I think forums help Micallef sell out, his work was selling at a good rate when with Eyestorm, we started to discuss his work on the Lightside Banksy forum, started his own group, over a space of a week everything had sold out and the prices had rocketed. In a way I was gutted as I was going to 21st century in the July for £400 then it went to £600 in Sep and I still could not make up my mind, Next I knew it was 2k then 3k then 4k then 5k, I know Laz had a sell out show and the hype of SG plus the fact he was established anyway but needed a break I do fill both forums had a part in the rise of popularity.

Do you think Art Forums influencing sales?, by corblimeylimey on Feb 26, 2007 16:19:25 GMT 1, At the time of posting this forum has 2814 members, I don't know how many of them are regularly active.
Considering some print runs are around the one or two hundred mark, it doesn't take a very big percentage of people here to buy something to make quite an effect on sales.

Do you think Art Forums influencing sales?, by monkeypuzzle on Feb 26, 2007 16:23:36 GMT 1, How true ABC, alot of folk here are here to discuss art they like, and hear about artists other like, sadly alot of the lurkers are here to get a heads up on what folk are finding, and liking. Micallef, neate, baldwin, maclaughlin have all been discussed at length and sold out due to the free and entheusiastic advertising from this and other forums, dont think there is much to be done apart from buy what you like when you see it, as it may be 10 times the price or totally unavailable 3 weeks later. In the last year the number of must have now / cool print of the week prints ( eelus, dolk, micallef etc ), that if they hadnt been talked about on these forums would still be basking in unsold obscurity is increasing with the current run on all things POW ( eric the dog?). I believe the forums do have a major influence on print sale but its a localised effect, on a bigger scale I doubt many folk from the real world would care one way or another if POW sold out ofEine's blue monster prints, its turning into a trainspotters paradise for many rather than a healthy interest in contemporary artists. IMO

Do you think Art Forums influencing sales?, by ABC on Feb 26, 2007 16:32:33 GMT 1, I dont know if the establishment has officially recognised "Street art" as the next movement but we seem to have created a following for the artists we like. There are a lot of artists that have been doing great stuff for years, Blek (old man of the street), Phill frost etc etc but it has taken the likes of Banksys following to give the rest their chance IMO

Do you think Art Forums influencing sales?, by RBK on Feb 26, 2007 16:54:03 GMT 1, I think both forums have a significant effect on prints that people buy. I don't believe the same can be said for originals. Prints sell out in a matter of minutes on POW regardless of the artist. I think people are buying just for the sake of buying! A lot of this art is just OK - but bc it is on POW people gobble it up and act like sheep.
Not sure about you guys, but I'm tired with a lot of the 'street/stencil' art currently out there. Sick of seeing hyper-surreal characters, and the following subject matter: gasmasks, guns, skulls, angels & soldiers. While I love me some Banksy, think my tastes are going back to more artistically talented art.

Do you think Art Forums influencing sales?, by RBK on Feb 26, 2007 17:19:19 GMT 1, I will only be sharing upcoming artists with cetain forum members via direct emails - don't worry - you are one of them
I CANNOT wait to receive my Adam Neate - Paved With Gold; but aside from that - I'm done with stuff that has been hyped by the forums. Not to knock all the artists on POW (because I sure as hell can't produce art) but can the people buying these really tell me that they'll want this on their walls in 5-10 years? Methinks not.

but I've been into Adam Neate before the forums picked up on his trail. I couldn't afford an original back in the day when I first found him; and I did pick up a print in recent times because I sure as hell can't afford an original now.

at least your honest. I bought signed space invader 'alex' because I knew it would sell out quick and I wouldn't have the time to decide where it would go or even whether I liked it that much and I was getting caught up in the whole santas getto print buying frenzy thing. it arrived a few days later and I hated it and have now sold it.

Do you think Art Forums influencing sales?, by philhecht on Feb 26, 2007 18:03:24 GMT 1, I have definitely been influenced by this forum and for me this is only a good thing. It has introduced me to a world of artists that I would not normally have come across and now I am addicted.
I read about Banksy in the press, got interested in his work, did a Google search, this website came up and a week later I had bought a Dolk and a Faile.
So in conclusion, yes this forum has had a huge influence on me but only insofar as it introduced me to what is out there. It doesn't have a huge influence on me as to what exactly I purchase, because that is down to my personal taste rather than if other people like it.

Do you think Art Forums influencing sales?, by tadghostal on Feb 26, 2007 18:08:35 GMT 1, All I can say is, I used to hate zeus, but then after reading all the glowing reviews of his work--particularly 'impact'--i found myself persuaded, and now it is the pride and joy of my collection! Who cares if it hasn't gone up to a brazaillion dollars yet?! I'm not one of those people who are just trying to hitch a ride on the street-art gravy train--I'm in it for the way the images make me feel, and when that zeus print catches the corner of my eye. . . . well . . . . I just love it.
And I would have never found it if it hadn't been for all the wonderful comments on these very pages. Thanks guys!

Do you think Art Forums influencing sales?, by sausageboonwee on Feb 26, 2007 18:25:34 GMT 1, Rklimek, I was only joking - I was really interested in Adam Neate's work a few years ago. I was supposed to go to an event in Spitalfields where he was producing drawings on card and giving them away. My daughter was poorly so I couldn't make it. About 3 months ago I was in Fopp on Tottenham Court Road and saw a copy of Graffiti World with an original Neate cover which for some reason I didn't buy. I have a friend that has 2 originals that Adam provided for the walls of a party (there were loads!). Even though I critisised the new prints I did actually treat myself to a Tea Drinker, my favourite of the bunch and it is lovely in the flesh. I am fully aware that I am a hypocrite. I just wish I had an original.

I think it's obvious I agree that forums influence sales. That's ok by me, if it means somebody mentions an artists they love and that makes me curious and I check it out and dig it, too. Otherwise I wouldn't have known about that particular artist and they would be a shame.
That said, I don't buy into "hype" and I feel it's definitely present at times on this forum. And that's to be expected, as it's kind of marketing 101 for the digital age. Ultimately it's up to us as individuals as to whether or not we agree with it. We're all smart enough to make our own decisions...

Do you think Art Forums influencing sales?, by RBK on Feb 26, 2007 20:29:35 GMT 1, I believe that they were only available through Elm Lesters. I contacted them before that exhibition had even started. The only downside is that my finances don't allow me to frame it right away - at least something to tangibly work towards in the coming month Plus, hopefully I'll be able to get some inspiration from others that were lucky enough to score one.
