Damage to prints..., by stingray on Feb 26, 2007 19:21:17 GMT 1, Until recently all the prints that I owned that weren't up on my walls were kept in my closet in their tubes. One of these is an unsigned Grannies. About a month ago I fancied having a bit of a gander at the print. I took out the Grannies print (very carefully) and slowly rolled it out. I wanted to have a proper look at it so I went into the kitchen and took out 4 clean mugs from my cupboard to hold down the corners.
I admired the print and (although it is not my favourite, bit too pink) thought to myself that I must get it framed as soon as payday comes around.
I removed the mugs, only to discover that one of the mugs I had used had been ever so slightly wet. A gasp of horror, several frantic minutes of blowing, swearing and fanning later revealed a perfect half circle of ever so slightly raised paper on the edge of the print.
When I get it framed you won't really be able to see it unless you properly look for it but nonetheless it is pretty gutting to realise that my stupidity wiped off a sizable chunk of the print's value.
I was just wondering if any other forum members have done anything equally moronic or if I am the only one?

The only difference here being that you've inadvertently caused the damage yourself. They may be able to issue you with a new one with the same number provided that you send your damaged one back. My advice is give them a call and see what they say.

That didn't even occur to me. I'll give them a call tomorrow and see what they say. You never know. Thank you.

sorry, if it makes you feel better I know of someone who spilled his tea on a GWB, someone who' bought a cropped and faded GWB and yes, I really did once buy a photo of a GWB instead of the real thing in a scam 
I've also seen several ripped, pinned and blutacked prints.. you are definitely not the first, and certainly not the last

Damage to prints..., by corblimeylimey on Feb 26, 2007 19:53:17 GMT 1, I'm surprised the water has had such a bad effect, I'm sure that when my framer was talking about the conservation tape and it's possible future removal, that water would be used to dab away any residue.
It's possible that any effect you're noticing now may be gone in a day or so when it's fully dried.
Please let us know how it develops.

Damage to prints..., by Run Pig Run on Feb 26, 2007 20:34:28 GMT 1, when putting my -fresh out the tube, curled to buggery- grenade girl in it's frame I was holding it at each end trying to lay it flat in the frame, as i lowered it down the four corners all folded inwards towards the middle. The sheer terror caused me to panic and as I rapidly lowered the print down towards frame my thumb creased the paper at one end causing an annoying crease the shape of a bomerang and around 5cm high.

If you've ever looked in Sotheby and Christie's catalogs, you see nearly every print listed undergoes some type of mistreatment along the way. I understand that it is a bit easier to take care of this stuff now knowing what others have done in the past, but you still have to expect quite a few to get damaged.

I handle lots of art as part of my job (I scan it for reproduction). Years ago when I was using a drum scanner I had my worst accident with any art, a watercolour, which became unstuck from the rapidly spinning perspex drum, it shattered and torn into hundreds of tiny pieces within a few seconds.
I had to go to the bosses office with my hands cupped holding a pile of confetti and declare that I had an accident. Trouble was by then I'd got over the initial shock and saw the funny side so as the words were coming out a smirk appeared on my face, unfortunately my boss was just going into his shock stage.
P.S. do I get a prize for causing the most damage to an original piece of art?

Brilliant. I laughed out loud when I read that. I can just imagine your face as the print turned to confetti. I imagine even worse when the print isn't yours.

I got shouted at, luckily I didn't have do deal with the owner of the work. The owners of the business dealt with it, I didn't hear how it went, but it would have cost them (or their insurers) a fair bit.

Scares the crap out of me, everytime something comes from POW i spend about 10 mins trying to coax the print out of the tube. Worrying about finger prints creases etc, then handel the print like touching the Turin shroud, whilst my girlfriend watches shaking her head at me behaving like a mad man

that's what Black Rat do. It works a treat.
