Is Banksy about to go 6pm on us??, by rodlarock on Dec 11, 2006 11:28:27 GMT 1, Is Banksy about to go "6pm" on us?
It seems off the back of the LA prints and BARELY LEGAL show BANKYS enviroment has changed dramatically -
Prices have increased for all his work Mainstream news media is taking an increased interest in the so called "Banksy Effect" A growing army of new Banksy fans join the team ever day
Lots of people will "Hate" on Banksy and LAZ and POW no matter how they decide to release the next print... lets say "TROLLEY HUNTERS" wether its via Lottery - Online or Santas Ghetto... People will miss out, old fans, New collectors, ebay vultures, me probably.
So where to now..
My question is..
How best from a media point of view will the powers that be manage the release of any new BANKSY prints??
To answer that I would guess you must first know where LAZ and BANKSY imagine themselves to in the next 5 years.. I believe they have a plan...
Does LAZ and BANKSY want to back off and take a step down, take some heat out of the HYPE market..
Maybe cool things off, try and protect BANKSY's street image. Back away from the high end celebrity...
OR
Do BANKSY and LAZ want to strike while the media, the fans and the collectors are crying out for anything Banksy and go for the mass media NEWS EVENT!!
The front page - CNN - 6pm news stunt??
Photos of riot police closing off oxford street as 600 Banksy prints go live at the ghetto on closing night and 1000 cracked out banksy freaks storm the building.. Splashed across news papers and news reports worldwide!
Im just having a laugh but which way will LAZ and BANKSY go???
Back to the street or the HYPER REAL 6pm news event
We all know that this activity and press coverage is what fuels the high end market for Banksy canvas.... the 100K market - Sothebys and Brad Pitts..
But I know absolutely nothing about Banksy the man, he might fancy a Nottinghill Palace and might want to buy a slice of Bristol Rovers... so he might be looking for the 1 Million dollars canvas. Or Banksy might not give a toss.
But I know one thing about Art Dealers/Record Companies/ Book Publishers/ Tv Executives/ Film Producers... LAZ would have his eyes on the prize.
Thanks for your time.

One thing for sure, is that hype doesn't exist in a vacuum. The hype created during the LA show, for instance, was for the most part the work of a big huge PR firm that Banksy and gang hired. Lots of people who have never heard of Banksy has been introduced to him only relatively recently through the media.
So judging by the actions of Laz et al., I do not think that "backing away from the high end celebrity" is on their agenda at all. It's rather the opposite. If you wanted to stay underground, you would never hire a publicist in the first place.
Just my 2ยข
