Was Banksy ever a jobbing artist?, by shakey1181 on Jan 25, 2011 12:47:45 GMT 1, I was in a pub in London Bridge the other day and there was a fairly cheesy ‘Ye Olde Worlde’ mural covering a massive wall, and it made me wonder if banksy (or any artists followed on here really) had ever done anything like this in the early days.
Painting pubs/clubs/shops probably isn’t totally unrealistic to think happened in addition to street stuff. If so, what did they look like, was there a natural progression from the early work to what is produced now, and if anyone would care what their early work looked like, other than a nice piece of history. Or have the majority kept with the same formula from day one and it is only the recent ‘street art’ boom that has brought them to mainstream attention?

Was Banksy ever a jobbing artist?, by shakey1181 on Jan 25, 2011 13:35:22 GMT 1, There's a massive Sickboy piece in Rough Trade East. Well worth checking out.
Will do fragile, do you know when it was done? i.e was it before he was widely known? that's what i would find interesting, if any artists were (kind of) commissioned to do murals etc. before they became successful, and if the work they did reflected their usual style/output.

Was Banksy ever a jobbing artist?, by shakey1181 on Jan 25, 2011 13:44:09 GMT 1, Banksy's first show was in a pub - the Dragon Bar - in Old Street. One of his other early shows was at the Severn Shed, a restaurant/bar in Bristol.
was it an actual show, or did he paint the pub/restuarant? what I mean is, has banksy, or any artist, painted murals, commissions, walls etc prior to becoming recognised as a 'name' and whether or not these reflected their later work.

His first 'show' was actually an exhibition of paintings in a flat in Easton, Bristol back in 1999, if you don't count the 'Walls of Fire' event in Bristol in 1998.

Was Banksy ever a jobbing artist?, by jakek on Jan 25, 2011 14:48:54 GMT 1, There's a freehand banksy mural in the tattoo shop on park row - will looks for some pics on flickr.
There was (possibly still there?) a brilliant wtm piece in the cafe just round the corner from Stolenspace.

Gone now i'm afraid Jake, there is something in it's place although I'm not sure what
Not a mural but on the lines of jobbing work I know someone who has a drawing for a student clubnight in Leceister that he used to help run that he claims was done by the man 'exposed' in the daily mail exposé

Was Banksy ever a jobbing artist?, by Strange Al on Jan 25, 2011 15:20:16 GMT 1, As others have mentioned, Banksy has painted various venues over the years.
Aside from those mentioned already, the pieces at Cargo in East London (HMV, Guard with poodle, designated graffiti area, etc) and the Ocean Rooms Nightclub in Brighton (Laugh Now monkeys, angel, etc) immediately spring to mind.
The Laugh Now monkeys from the Ocean Rooms seem to have ended up at Artificial Gallery, via Bonhams - www.artificialgallery.co.uk/banksy/laugh-now-original/
Think there was also a bar/club in Oz somewhere (pretty sure there are pics somewhere on the forum), plus no doubt there are plenty more examples.
