Tunnel gives artists freedom to paint graffiti, by silvermyn on Jun 12, 2009 12:11:15 GMT 1, A giant "graffiti park" where artists can spray without fear of arrest is attracting hundreds of people every week.
The 200-metre pedestrian tunnel, near the defunct Eurostar terminal at Waterloo, has been adopted by East End company picturesonwalls, which produces prints by Banksy.
It came up with the idea as a way to reduce vandalism and offer young artists the chance to work without being prosecuted.
The tunnel has pieces by Banksy, including a monkey and a Buddha in a neck brace.
Graffiti artist David, 25, tag name Rabies, said: "Some people say graffiti makes people feel threatened but here it brightens up a dark, dingy space and is treated like a free art gallery. I also think it means artists are less likely to tag shops and streets."
The work in the walkway, off Leake Street, changes daily. Rabies said: "Nobody is precious about their pieces. It evolves all the time. Even Banksy's work has been painted over."
The tunnel, owned by BRB Residuary Ltd, was used by Kevin Spacey and the Old Vic last month for a performance inspired by Fritz Lang's 1927 sci-fi film Metropolis.
