Rats! Banksy artwork done in wall heist, by silvermyn on Jun 4, 2009 11:59:31 GMT 1, YET another Banksy has been burgled — this time the work that has been pinched from the public is a 35 cm rat gouged out from a wall in Notting Hill.
“The Banksy was just outside our gallery on Needham road,” Yvonna Demczynska, managing director of the Flow gallery, which specialises in contemporary crafts, explains. “Yesterday morning we noticed that there was a great hole an inch deep where the Banksy was, it looked like it had been taken off with a chisel, there was a crack in the middle so maybe it disintegrated in their hands.
“It wasn’t insured and we will miss it dearly. It was a little rat and we really have grown to love it. It was artwork for everybody. When the neighbours moved in they actually wanted to paint over it but we explained it was a very important piece of art. Now it has been taken.”
Communities are increasingly protective over their Banksys in recent years as street connoisseurs fight to preserve them from over-eager graffiti-removing councils and acts of vandalism by other street artists. Last year Banksy himself managed to persuade Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Bonham’s to refuse to deal in street art. He will no doubt be disappointed that another one of his artworks for the masses has been removed from public view.

Rats! Banksy artwork done in wall heist, by graeme501 on Jun 4, 2009 15:04:26 GMT 1, this really is a shame, the owners could easily have done what they liked with their wall, but decided that it was artwork for everybody, as all street pieces should be
