diamond auction for charity, by verbalkint on Jul 9, 2007 5:34:28 GMT 1, I will be listing a diamond for auction on ebay monday evening. 100% of the sale price will go to the mercy centre, the charity which SOS donated the proceeds of the unsigned LV child to. I was alerted to their work by SOS and it is a great charity, no big fat cat MDs taking big wages, so if you have any use for a diamond then please bid on this auction, or if you have any friends that might then tell them about it too
I realise it would be more appropriate to post this on here if i was auctioning a print or something art related, but this is the only forum i am a member of and i know there are some good people on here, plus the more people who know, the better in my opinion
Also my other reason for posting is if any of you are involved with, or know of any worthwhile charities that you feel strongly about then please pass their details on to me and assuming they are a well run charity (the money going to their cause and not their pockets) i will run future charity auctions for them too
thanks

diamond auction for charity, by Strange Al on Jul 9, 2007 8:40:43 GMT 1, + Respect from me too Verbal.
Perhaps it would be more appropriate to donate the money to Global Witness or Amnesty International or similar (i.e., a charity/organisation which seeks to combat the trade in Conflict Diamonds - something which I'm sure you applaud), though the Mercy Centre seems like a very worthwhile cause.

diamond auction for charity, by verbalkint on Jul 9, 2007 15:43:07 GMT 1, i ACTUALLY HAVE SERTAIN ISSUES WITH THE TERM 'CONFLICT DIAMONDS'. tHOUGH I WILL NEVER TRADE IN THEM ON GENERAL PRINCIPLE, ALOT OF THE MYTH SURROUNDING THEM IS CREATED BY THE LIKES OF DE BEERS, WHO CONTROL THE DIAMOND INDUSTRY (80% OF IT) THEY FORCE THE MINES TO SELL THEIR DIAMONDS FOR CRAP MONEY AND ALOT OF THE MONEY THEY GIVE GOES ON WEAPONS AND CIVIL WAR, BUT THEY MAKE SURE ITS ALL COVERED UP WHILE THEY ALSO MAKE SURE THAT MOVIES SUCH AS 'BLOOD DIAMOND' GET FINANCED TO MAKE THEM LOOK LIKE THE KNIGHTS IN SHINING ARMOUR. IF THEY GAVE A FAIR PRICE FOR DIAMONDS IN THE FIRST PLACE AND DIDNT STOCK PILE THEM TO KEEP THE PRICES ARTIFICIALLY HIGH, THERE WOULDNT BE A CONFLICT DIAMOND TRADE AT ALL BECAUSE THOSE MINES WOULD CHOOSE TO SELL TO THEM.
ITS A SIMILAR SITUATION TO SADDAM BEING DEMONISED FOR REFUSING TO BOW TO THE US AND SELL THEM CHEAP OIL, IF HE HAD HE WOULD HAVE BEEN OUR FRIEND, REGARDLESS OF HOW MANY OF HIS OWN PEOPLE HE TORTURED AND KILLED (JUST LIKE THE SAUDIS ARE OUR 'FRIENDS' EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE AS BAD) ITS A SIMPLE CASE OF MINES BEING DEMONISED FOR NOT HELPING TO MAKE THE WEST RICHER WHILE THEY STAY POOR. ALOT OF THE SO-CALLED 'CONFLICT DIAMOND' MONEY ACTUALLY GOES TO HELP THE PEOPLE, BUT AS ALOT OF IT GOES TO HELP KILL THEM I WILL NEVER BUY FROM THEM, BUT I WILL NEVER BUY FROM DE BEERS EITHER.
SORRY ABOUT THE CAPITALS, IM NOT SHOUTING, I JUST DIDNT REALISE THEY WERE ON TILL THE END!!

diamond auction for charity, by Strange Al on Jul 9, 2007 16:57:00 GMT 1, Verbal – “Conflict Diamonds” are obviously an incredibly complex socio-political issue. I’m sure you’re more aware of the politics surrounding them than most. I applaud your stance of never trading in them; particularly, given your reservations regarding the term itself. Irrespective of the causes of “conflict diamonds”, I think we’re agreed that the industry should ensure that the Kimberly process isn’t circumvented and that the public should be encouraged to check the heritage of the diamonds they buy. It's a simple message and one which is relayed in the film Blood Diamond.
I don’t know if you’ve seen Blood Diamond or read the press surrounding its release, but given your comments wouldn’t think that you have. The film is far from endorsed or financed by the diamond industry. In fact, certain key members of the diamond industry lobbied heavily to prevent the film from being produced and released. The diamond industry also stuck millions of dollars into a marketing campaign to counter-act the potential negative effects of the movie on the diamond trade; particularly, in the US. OK, so the film takes certain dramatic license, but show me a film which doesn’t. Ultimately, it’s a thoroughly entertaining piece of movie-making, which touches on some very important issues.

diamond auction for charity, by verbalkint on Jul 9, 2007 19:14:44 GMT 1, it was a very good movie lesbienwednesdays. great acting and it gets you thinking. The point you made about the kimberly process is an excellent one. Unfortunatly the diamond industry is full of criminals and shady people. One very reputable dealer in antwerp was recently found to be sending high grade diamonds off to be certificated, attaching those certificates to lower grade diamonds and then sending off the same ones to get more certificates. They caught him by micro lazer engraving some of the diamonds with a code so when he sent them back again he was rumbled. The only way round this problem is you can have a diamond graded and the certificate number is lazer engraved on the base of the diamond. it is not visible to the eye and does not take away from the diamonds beauty, but then at least you know that a certain certificate is for a particular diamond. Unfortunatly it is not compulsary, so no one does it. They could also use the same engraving process to stamp diamonds to say where they are from, where they have been cut and which site holder sold them and to who etc etc, but the industry is not regulated well enough. The profits are high and so are the stakes so it naturally follows that there will be corruption.
