Banksy Dip?, by corblimeylimey on Jul 25, 2007 18:31:50 GMT 1, Recently instead of the ever increasing prices, a few sales have been lower
Love Rat went for ยฃ839 ( 300131387199 ) last one went for best offer ยฃ999 Flag went for ยฃ709 ( 260140813270 ) previously ยฃ790 & ยฃ755
Is this a dip? or is it just due to being near the end of the month, or the sellers (feedback etc), anyone noticed this on other pieces?

Banksy Dip?, by jonpud on Jul 25, 2007 18:38:31 GMT 1, As we know they suddenly had a price hike couple of months ago and everyone jumped on the bandwagon to sell. There have been 4 signed WSM's for sale in a month, two sold for ยฃ7500, one for ยฃ8200 and the last one for ยฃ7k.
Just too many available recently. Also I think people are saving their cash for the next POW release, think everyone expecting it to happen very soon. After that mad rush and the flippers are done, then you might find a WSM selling for 10K!!
Cycle keeps repeating itself!

Surely temporary... jonpud is right though, think about the thousands that have been spent by members of just this forum buying up Laz's Micallefs! I also think people who had been on the fence about cashing out of some Banksys began to sell once they saw big prices on ebay... hence the higher than average amount of prints on the resale market, which drives up supply and downs prices.

Banksy Dip?, by Jamesy Wamesy on Jul 25, 2007 18:55:07 GMT 1, Like any commodity market it will go up and down....
I think people have been spending a lot on Micallef of late, but banksy is still very strong. I think there is a natural cieling price that each signed print hits. The average is ยฃ5000, this is why we see Morons, Applause and Grannies just starting to hit it...
I find ยฃ5000 a mental barrier too, spending more on art, especially a print, is tough at this level.
;D

Banksy Dip?, by dgb133 on Jul 25, 2007 19:24:06 GMT 1, MARKET VOLATILITY
There are a couple examples of a few prints selling for more recently, Like Morons and Love Rat. Catching up to others and maybe an underappreciation? But a lot of prints have also sold for less than their record high now also. Some by quite a few hundred. Hard to determine how much has to do with provenance etc. But in my mind we're seeing the volatility associated with price peaks. ALthough it can also be assocated with bottoms. One or the other, but this defnitely is not a bottom.
inhome.rediff.com/money/2007/jun/26spec.htm
Butu of course when Flags and Grannies goes from about $900 to $2000 USD in several weeks. A dip of 1 or even two hundred is nothing. I'm still holding out for a return to approximately 500-600 GBP for them. Average signed prints I won't consider buying unless they drop to 3000-4000 GBP. Even then not sure I can pull it off or would. If that don't happen my only hope is getting a festival

;D - And not only can they go down as well as up, despite what everyone seems to think they can also become practically worthless as the art market is as shallow as any other ! For evidence of this, I personally wonder whether people are currently directing their money into Beejoir and others ... maybe this has created a slight dip ? By the way, before you throw pitch forks at me, you may be reassured to know that I personally don't actually own a banksy, so any dip, dent or complete drop in the market is helpful to me personally ! But it should be considered that there are trends in art like everything else and most investment is due to peices being representative of a time/period or era ... Banksy prints certainly are, but so are several others ....

Anything's possible but highly inlikely in my opinon. Even though I think Banksy work is overpriced and overhyped as far as values go he is pretty well established in the proper art world.
I mean $16,000 currently on ebay for a signed flying copper? That's about double what a rational art market should price it at in my opinon. And that opinon is based on what prints in editions as large as Banksy's sell for by other top living artists in the world. (i.e Ed Ruscha, John Currin, Damien Hirst, etc.) If I'm spending that much money. I could definitely recommend some much rarer and probably original pieces by some really great established artist.

Banksy Dip?, by corblimeylimey on Jul 25, 2007 20:57:13 GMT 1, My opinion is that it's just a temporary dip, which may be over in a week or two.
As I mentioned in another thread an email I had from the Sims Reed gallery was offering me prints from Bacon, Hamilton, Hockney, Lichtenstein, & Warhol at really stupid prices, here's some examples....
Francis Bacon Lithograph printed in colours, 1973. Signed in ink and numbered in pencil 143/180. ยฃ16,000 gbp
Richard Hamilton Toaster Lithograph printed in colours with collaged metalized polyester, 1967. Signed in pencil and numbered 60/75. ยฃ32,000 gbp
Richard Hamilton Adonis in y-fronts Screenprint in colours, 1963. Signed in pencil and numbered from the edition of 40. ยฃ45,000 gbp
Roy Lichtenstein Temple Lithograph printed in colours, 1964. Signed in pencil and numbered 223/300. ยฃ6,000 gbp
Andy Warhol Flowers Lithograph printed in colours, 1964. Signed in ball-point pen and dated โ64. From the edition of approximately 300. ยฃ12,000 gbp

Banksy Dip?, by dgb133 on Jul 25, 2007 21:15:43 GMT 1, Right, but how long have those guys been dead? And look at the editions sizes. And consider that I highly doubt any of those prints were also released in an unsigned edition of 500!
For the price of 1 signed flying copper you can seriously get a signed print by Jeff Koons, (1-2k)Ed Ruscha, (2-3k) Robert Rauschenberg, (1-4k) and Damien Hirst (3k-10k). Of course those guys also may have prints that sell for tens of thousands but if you're thrifty you can find signed editions by these guys for an insane fraction of what Banksy's are going for. And you can still get some really great Warhol Signed prints for anywhere form $5,0000-$20,000. (20 years after he died) And if I had money to blow like that I would definitely buy say Warhol's mick jagger print for 20k than a Flying Copper. I also own one painting by an artist in the Satchi collection for example. Cost me less than what some of Banksy's unsigned prints in editions of 500 go for. The painting is small, but still. I guess to each his own.
I can understand if it's a really special Banksy print like Radar Rat or Kate Moss, but Flying Copper? Are you serious? A dip for 1 or 2 weeks? In my opinon you're looking at about 1 or 2 years of stagnation after this kind of rise. I'm not claiming they'll collapse. But at this point. I think prices will be going nowhere for a long time. Slight rise slight dip. And I'm really trying to keep level headed about it.

Banksy Dip?, by stuey09 on Jul 25, 2007 21:23:09 GMT 1, I think it comes down to supply and demand. If there is a shortage of Banksy's on offer then those who want to own, have to compete financially to get. Therefore the price remains bouyant. If the market is flooded then, as we have seen, the price tends to stay steady. I think that because a lot of people have spent large sums recently and are selling in order to recoup, the glut is actually keeping the prices quite steady. Hope that makes sense.

Banksy Dip?, by dgb133 on Jul 25, 2007 21:30:13 GMT 1, We'll see. But I really think it will take months or years for the dust to settle and prices to stabilize for sure. Wouldn't be surprised to see another peak and years of stangantion and dips.
But also gluts, no gluts. Everyone still seems to think buying a Banksy is a free ride to the bank. This kind of thing just won't last forever. When the ride's over the ripples will really hurt the market.
