Banksy Dip?, by Strange Al on Jul 25, 2007 21:37:56 GMT 1, What surprised me was the Roy Lichtenstein Lithograph 223/300 £6,000, seems pretty steep for a 300 edition lithograph. Same for the Andy Warhol Flowers edition approx 300 lithograph £12,000 crazy money IMO
Yes - even for a litho. While I love screenprints, as a method of printing it has both benefits and limitations. IMO certain works simply cannot be recreated properly as hand-pulled screenprints (and yes I know BRP would argue otherwise) and you have to resort to other methods to faithfully re-create the work. While the forum may dismiss many modern printing techniques out of hand, the fine art guild accepts both litho and giclee prints.
As you know, Lichtenstein, Warhol, Bacon are amongst the most celebrated artists of all time. Banksy is a great artist, but he has quite some way to go before he reaches anything like the stature of these guys (if ever). Yet Andipa and a lot of the other galleries charge similar prices for signed Banksy prints from editions of 150.

Banksy Dip?, by cityman on Jul 25, 2007 21:43:55 GMT 1, The Banksy Vs Warhol exhibition may stir things up a bit, also surely it won't be too long before we see a proper Banksy exhibition again.
he's taking 2007 off.
expect him back in 2008 - hopefully a UK show this time

Banksy Dip?, by RBK on Jul 25, 2007 22:01:16 GMT 1, Personally I don't think the Warhol vs. Banksy exhibition is going to do much for prices. It's not as if NEW works (his artisitic progression) are going to be on display.

It will create a buzz and extra publicity though won't it.

Oh definitely - but are there people in the UK who still don't know about Banksy? I think that one of the wisest things career-wise for him to do would have a 'Barely Legal' caliber exhibition in NYC. Remember Banksy does not have the cult-like following he enjoys in the UK here in the US... yet.

He can't be seen trying to milk the American market. I would doubt it very much that he would go back to the states for a long time. He might bomb the hell out of it though, which might go down quite well with the rest of the world (and the locals no doubt). Risky though.
