POLICE are on the hunt for an elusive Brixham graffiti painter whose work pays homage to notorious renegade street artist Banksy.
One of the images — a young woman with a balloon on the corner of Ranscombe Road — mimics Banksy's stencilled Balloon Girl which sold at Sotheby's for £37,200.
Striking images of a seagull on a bomb, and Tesco hand grenades in the town centre, nod to Banksy's satirical art on topics like politics, culture and ethics.
A saucy pair of scarlet lips painted on the wall of the Herald Express office in King Street, welcoming Brixham's new reporter to her post, is the latest piece of street art to grace the town.
The cheeky mystery artist has also sprayed some 'class bees' on the baptist church wall in Market Street.
Town centre police community support officer David Bird admits the artworks are 'eye catching', but he is worried they may spark copycat graffiti which is not in the same artistic league.
He said: "As much as we appreciate they are very nice and eye catching, they are along the lines of graffiti.
"I do admit this particular type of graffiti is different to normal graffiti, but we don't want it to encourage other types of graffiti.
"The amount of characters that are appearing in and around the Brixham area are becoming a bit of a nuisance and we would like to know if anyone has any idea of who the artist may be."
Joe Cloutman, chairman of Brixham Chamber of Trade, says the artwork brings a smile to his face, adding: "They're quite good really and quite artistic.
"The artist has obviously got a sense of humour. I think they brighten the town up a bit.
"But I wouldn't want to see other forms of graffiti in the town."
