ebay activity, by stencilope on Jul 5, 2006 13:35:46 GMT 1, Is it just me or does Ebay activity seemed to have cooled off a bit of late. Lots of "no sales" and "reserves not met" compared to ealier this year, and lower prices on some prints than a month or two ago. Is this just a cyclical or seasonal lull or are we seeing a lack of sustained press cooling off demand/new interest.
Perhaps, considering the small number of early prints out there and the small number of collectors, activity is waning because we are getting our collections filled out? I know there was a record-breaking peak for print prices there for a few weeks, but I'm beginning to think it was a bit of a bubble. A bubble named Numusic most likely... I actually think that this small group (here and the Ebay forum) is probably MOST of the market for these prints right now. We probably control the cost/demand MUCH more than we think....

ebay activity, by Daniel Silk on Jul 5, 2006 14:10:09 GMT 1, Yeah, I think most of us have now got much of what we are ever likely to get in the way of a Banksy collection. I think people are now more clued up on what some of the pieces are worth and what they should sell for, so people are putting higher reserves so they are not always selling. Also people are realising that they could be selling a picture for ยฃ500 now that could have been sold for double that in a years time Just looking at the numbers of people that are still joining this forum ever week, loads of people are only just finding out about Banksy so I think the prices will always stay pretty strong

ebay activity, by mido on Jul 5, 2006 14:16:22 GMT 1, it's all a bit weird if you ask me.
Someone paid ยฃ360 BIN for an unsigned CND, whilst another one went for less..... (I had a Cauty book up for sale at ยฃ14 - didn't sell - at the same time two people got into a bidding war for an identical copy and ended up shelling out ยฃ27!)
An UNsigned J&J went for ยฃ311
Signed CND Soldiers have rocketed up to ยฃ700/800 odd
The rats are very hit and miss. Some are ยฃ120 ish, others have been over ยฃ200.
Some of the 'reserves' have been silly. Several rats have got over the ยฃ200 mark but not met the reserve. They only sold out a month or so ago...

ebay activity, by foundation on Jul 5, 2006 14:24:21 GMT 1, I know what you mean stencilope, but as Withus says, many of the people selling are getting a good idea of what the prints are worth and are getting an idea of the possibility of what they will be worth. It is excellent that the numbers keep on growing for the membership, in no small way to the friendly nature of both groups and extracurricular efforts such as Martins tours. I do hope the numbers keep on growing as they have and that most folk are able to get their hands on some banksy stuff at some point, the whole idea ( as far as I have been able to see is an art for the people type of thing rather than the exclusivity of art collecting as it was / is with other artists). It would be a shame for some to loose interest due to the prohibitive costs but hats off to places like POW for attempting to keep alot of great art within the reach of so many more people than it would have been otherwise. There does seem to be a core of entheusiasts (sp?) on both forums that help keep things chugging along, as long as there is momentum there and an enjoyable place to log onto to get informed, the interest and memberships will keep on rising. Thanks to all who help keep it going.

ebay activity, by Daniel Silk on Jul 5, 2006 14:25:19 GMT 1, ;D Yeah, it seems some people cant be bothered to do a full search for everything Banksy on ebay and they all end up fighting over one piece and push the price sky high. You can still pick up a bargain on ebay if you spend some time trawling through every single advert

ebay activity, by foundation on Jul 5, 2006 14:29:44 GMT 1, Most of the original bargains seemto be gone these days Withus, it all seems relative now. I think the silly reserves will stop soon as they realise that the prints are not shifting, there is a loverat from spain that is up for the 3rd time i think, its been above 200 in bidding but not to reserve. It was on sale 2 weeks ago at POW for 75.

ebay activity, by monochrome on Jul 5, 2006 16:02:01 GMT 1, interestingly..... i sold a couple of prints recently. bought by dealers
i think there are a few buyers who are 'completists' ie. they want every single Banksy. whether they couldn't afford years ago or are new to the game they seem to be snapping up everything. good luck.
also, there are a few 'traders', one of whom i met recently when he bought from me - his activity is amazing considering he's in a well paid job... sold my print a month later and made only ยฃ50 or so, yet has been in for numerous others since. i guess it's one way of making a million!
and lastly (my pet hate) are those people who set their BINs so high they deserve no sells - at least they are forking out a tenner each time they list. there were some signed rats on at ยฃ750, they didn't sell, relisted 24hrs after the end date and price now at ยฃ775.... wasting money and driving a none existent market.... people will see that and think 'this is the value but won't be greedy'... they'll set theirs at ยฃ600 and some newbie will come along and snap up the ยฃ600 print thinking its a bargain as its really worth ยฃ175 more!!
Now that is how eBay works........

ebay activity, by dill on Jul 5, 2006 17:01:06 GMT 1, I am not sure there is less activity but I have noticed sellers giving up on auctions and going for over inflated buy it now prices. I got a bit drunk one night and bid ยฃ850 for a CND (up to that point they had been selling at about ยฃ450 to 500.) Ever since then every seller has put bin for cnd at ยฃ850 or even ยฃ900. I won the auction but i was drunk i shouldn't have bid that high. I think with an auction people can get carried away (e.g me) and pay a bit over the odds but that doesn't mean the print is actually worth that much.
if you want to know the value of a print put it on a 7 day auction and see what it gets...that is pretty much it's value. I think sellers have become ridiculously greedy and are setting absurdly high buy it now prices (ยฃ750 for a plackard rat is a good e.g.) and it is slowing the sales turnover down.
I noticed last week several rats not making their reserve...I think one struggled around ยฃ70 quid. I think the demand is there I just don't thing high BIN prices is the way to stimulate it......Having said that a queen vic just went for ยฃ800 after only being on for a few days...so what do i know

ebay activity, by Run Pig Run on Jul 5, 2006 17:03:04 GMT 1, Also, i think print prices are starting to fall due the amount that are on there at any one time - a few months back you would see 5-10 prints for sale, but now all the 'buy-to-sellers' have flooded ebay with rat prints etc. and there is always about 3 napalms on at one time.......the jack and jills keep coming up too. I reckon about ยฃ150-ยฃ250 is what the average person can afford to spend so i think prices will hover around this area......but then again what the hell do I know.

ebay activity, by dill on Jul 5, 2006 17:09:22 GMT 1, I was just wondering...i stayed up very late last night and managed to get hold of the greenpeace poster save or delete...it's not featured in the prints/stickers/paintings list at all ....would it not be an idea to include it? just wondering...perhaps mr fruitymetcalf could supply some sorely needed info on it?

ebay activity, by monochrome on Jul 5, 2006 17:18:06 GMT 1, just because 'Mr 5 prints' is selling Banksy's and sticking everything on BIN for ยฃ750 it doesn't mean a thing.... this all has a danger of spiralling I fear.
not too bothered myself as i've sold what i don't like (at profit to pay for my wedding) and kept what i will never sell.
but people are going to be hurt as individuals, not the market are deciding what something is worth. dangerous.

ebay activity, by foundation on Jul 5, 2006 17:44:01 GMT 1, The rats will settle out much the same as other prints have, its just a bit crazy as alot of prints all sold out at the same time a few months back and the carpet baggers are trying to get rid of their stock, when they realise that they wont get 400 pounds for a rat they will reevaluate their reserves to get rid of them, hopefully to good stable homes, not to be imediatley resold for for an extra 20 quid. The prices for the older prints is remaining gererally stable, i saw the queen vic that just sold and had a look at the qv thread on here, the prices seem to have been steady at 650 - 850 for the last few months, Numusic got one a while back for 750. I think this is starting to reach a ceiling point for unsigned prints across the market ( Laz has QV at 950 (+vat)) GWB at a grand, barcode 850 etc... they seem to reach a certain point and level.

ebay activity, by numusic on Jul 5, 2006 20:33:02 GMT 1, I know what you mean stencilope, but as Withus says, many of the people selling are getting a good idea of what the prints are worth and are getting an idea of the possibility of what they will be worth. Thanks to all who help keep it going.
well said that man ! ;D

It seems that the Banksy prices are now really getting out of most peoples reach, but thats where artists like D*Face, Dolk, Eelus & Beneine come in ;D You can still buy signed limited editions from around ยฃ30 upwards ;D

I was really pleased that I got it, last one went for one hundered and the one before went for about 175. I waited till five seconds to go then put in the bid...Glad to get a chance to apologise to you for my underhand tactics....but after the bidding war over CND i got involved in cost me so much...i kinda decided sneaky sniping is probably the way to go.
