Banksy's Most Iconic Piece, by Richard on Aug 25, 2008 10:38:31 GMT 1, I was thinking...out of all the images Banksy has created over the years, which ones do you guys feel are the most iconic?
So... Sunflowers is to Van Gough what ????????? is to Banksy.
Fill in the blank!
Personally, I think Laugh Now and Queen Victoria are his best works.
It will be interesting to see what everyone else thinks on this one...

Banksy's Most Iconic Piece, by weaver on Aug 25, 2008 11:13:21 GMT 1, Not sure if Iconic is the word as it stands for alot more.... but as far as the most recognisable Banksy image it has to be the rats... the sheer number and diversity of them makes them the most recognisable. To the folk who know, his other images are great and well known, but to the common joe in the street, the rats have to be the most recognised. Personal faves are grin reaper and sonic rat..... one day. It'll always be hard to separate our own personal faves, as each person views each piece in a different way.

Banksy's Most Iconic Piece, by Deleted on Aug 25, 2008 11:59:14 GMT 1, with Iconic I think about a piece that if people talk about banksy will occur to their minds first. In papers, magazine etc. you see the laugh now pictures very often! this catches high prices in auctions too.. you don't agree?

I agreed that for the people who know Banksy's work its a very popular image, but for the general public? doubt they'd know any of Banksy's work well enough to merrit the term iconic ( I REALLY dont like that word). I wasnt asking why specifically to the Laugh Now, its a topic that I feel needs an opinion / explanation attached as each person will have their own viewpoint, without that, it'll turn into another "whats my favourite print" thread.

Banksy's Most Iconic Piece, by giiiant on Aug 25, 2008 12:29:37 GMT 1, if you're talking about the general public its either the kissing coppers or the guy hanging out the window in my opinion simply because they seem to get more press coverage than any other pieces

All I am asking is what do you think is Banksy's Sunflowers is. Not necessarily what anyones favorite print is.

Banksy's Most Iconic Piece, by graeme501 on Aug 25, 2008 13:38:20 GMT 1, with 'iconic' u have to think of one image ... IMO the rats are too varied in image to be considered iconic, sure most on this forum could recognise the style, but what about people that just have a passing interest?
so with that, i think its either laugh now, kissing coppers or girl with balloon

IMO the rats are too varied in image to be considered iconic, sure most on this forum could recognise the style, but what about people that just have a passing interest? so with that, i think its either laugh now, kissing coppers or girl with balloon Going with that explanation, I would say none then, as anyone with a passing interest wouldnt really place works such as mildmild west, cash machine, kissing cops, flag raisers or the more recent silhouete work by the same artist, the rats have a comon look and theme running through them that links the many works across a wide geographical area and back to a single artist. I'm pretty sure ( even though we'd like to think differently) if you showed a picture of any of Banksy's work to someone in the street, 9 out of 10 wouldnt have the foggiest who painted it. As for Richards question, the 6 rat prints and numerous street rats, have to be a serious contender for the equivalent of Van-G's sun flowers, or why would he have done so many. Laugh Now is very popular at the moment, a similar question was asked about 2 years ago, with Grin reaper coming out on top as it was very popular at the time and Morons for its classical wit at this time last year.

Banksy's Most Iconic Piece, by hlarmy on Aug 25, 2008 16:40:08 GMT 1, Agree with howlinhooker, GWB runs a close second then LR chasing up its heels
What's the meaning behind GWB; because it doesn't mean anything to me I don't see the attraction?
My vote would be morons, love the image and the message behind it...
A different question all together but are all Banksy's prints based on originals - ie. is there an original Morons, Trolleys etc out there somewhere?

Banksy's Most Iconic Piece, by lee3 on Aug 28, 2008 18:15:22 GMT 1, I think this is a trick question because you're asking what is Banksy's second most recognizable image as I have to believe that Starry Night is Van Gogh's most famous. In that regard, I'll agree with Laugh Now since I believe Love is in the Air/Flower Thrower to be his most iconic.

Banksy's Most Iconic Piece, by jkaya on Aug 28, 2008 23:43:17 GMT 1, Starry Night and Laugh Now are certainly the most Branded images of Van Gogh and Bansky respectively. And seeing as Laugh Now was the featured lot (and the cover image) of Bonhams auction catalogue, I'd say it is the most iconic image among those on the business side of art/consumers/general public. His creative style and political wit are iconic, so most people who know Bansky could recognise that in any of his images.
