I don't know what you had in mind when you did such a feeble thing to M-City.
DtC: what I had in mind was to put back a piece of work that the residents of that area loved, and to cover an aggressive image. In the 13 years I have lived in London, we have been bombed by the IRA and muslim fanatics, and I don't want more bombs on the streets of my neighbourhood, a place where many of my good friends live. there is enough aggression in our streets without people adding more through images of weapons of hate and destruction.
Actually, what did M-City have in mind when he did such a feeble thing as to cover my work? maybe you could let me know. surely there were plenty of other walls in London he could have painted (there's one opposite in fact!)
I'm so astonished. In case you didn't notice, he's really talented and until now no one has been able to invent a technique like that.
DtC: "no one has been able to invent a technique like that" - really? it is a tiling technique, which people have been using for hundreds of years to print material, wallpaper, etc.
I in no way doubt his talent. I'm sure he has much more to give the world than repeat images of buildings.
Everyone is so old fashionned compared to him.
DtC: are you talking about his work? come now, there is nothing new about stencils in black on a white background. Have you heard of Blek le Rat? Or seen images of the Clash from 1979? How far back in history do you need me to go??
I'm not sure if you know that he is polish and he created this piece as a tribute to the London people who have been bombed by the Germans during the World War II.
DtC: my grandparents were bombed during WWII. they don't want to be reminded of their family and friends being killed. more recently the husband of a friend of one of my work colleagues was killed by the terrorist attack on the London Underground. She doesn't want to be reminded that she lost her husband, the man she loved. so thanks, but no one really wants bombs in the streets of London, it just reminds us of loss and pain.
This was M-City's specific project for London. Maybe you didn't get this intellectual content or it is perhaps beyond you're ability to see this.
DtC: no, I didn't see that a sideways city in the shape of a bomb was a tribute, and you'd think an artist would see that. I guess if I didn't see it, it would have been completely lost on the people of 70 years and over who actually experienced their home being destroyed by bombs. but it's sweet of him to try. maybe next time he wants to give something to the victims of aggression he could think of something that doesn't remind them of their attacker. maybe that would be a more thoughtful, even "intellectual", idea?

DtC: there were 40 artists in the "Can Festival" show, and, in fact, pretty much anyone who puts up stencils was allowed to participate. hardly exclusive! oh, and there was one rule for that show - "DON'T GO OVER ANYONE" - he painted over a piece of my work that the locals were very fond of. I just returned the favour (I don't have much time for rules ;-)
I'm preparing a new collective book about "Beautiful Street Art" and my god you can't be on the list !!

M-City's piece on 'your wall' or did you just happen to be in town?
I spoke to the previous owner of the building to seek permission to use it
in conjunction with the festival, didn't realise we also had to get your
permission as well.
Shame people who have been enjoying your piece for months won't now be able
to enjoy some new work on the spot.

yeah, it's a shame. a shame that of all the walls in London people have to go over ones already painted rather than spreading more colour in this grey city, and a shame that a half dozen people only managed to cover a small proportion of the wall, making it look a mess. but it's nice again now. no more bombs being dropped on a city that's had it's fair share of bombs dropped on it. positivity over aggression in a city with way too many kids being killed in the streets.
at least, 75% of the people who stopped to talk to me were happy the worm was back, including a little old lady who was so happy, told me how all the kids loved it, and then, in the tiniest whisper, told me that the stencils that had gone over it were "crap", before scuttling off. can't argue with the people who live there, it's their home after all.
it's not my wall, and I have never claimed it is. but graffiti artists paint on stuff, that's all there is too it. no beef, I just thought the wall looked a mess, now the majority of locals are happy with it. which is probably better for the travellers who live there too, as the locals won't be so offended by them (they seemed to have thought they had painted the wall)
I spoke to five of the people who live in the building, only one was upset, and two of them preferred what I'd done to the stencils. whatever people may think, I don't set out to offend people. but if a handful of graffiti artists are offended, that's their hang-up, they don't have to live there and all those people do. as my friend says "if a graffiti writer is upset when someone goes over their work, then they haven't got enough work up". And as I say "any graffiti artist who puts their web site address on a wall is no different than a corporation that covers our walls in advertising, and should be taken outside and shot" (only kidding, I'm anti-violence ;-) . but hey, different strokes for different folks. the only time is right now, and right now, my work is on top. if tomorrow it's someone else, so be it. that's how it was a few days ago, this is how it is now. that's life. the only constant is change.
and to be honest, right now I think the wall looks it's best yet. the bright colours over a layer of stark black and white look killer, really nice and bright for the summer. I even painted little hearts on the signs the stick men were holding, tying the piece together as a whole, rather than just a bunch of random stencils bundled together. I also left plenty of the stencils showing, so that everyone was on the wall. I could have just white-washed over a section like M-People did, but like I said, I thought that looked crap.
anyway, whatever, go paint over it again, I'm really not bothered. but maybe the locals are (one told me the stencil kids were rude to her, which isn't cool. gotta respect the people you're forcing your views on through art in their streets. make them dislike you and they'll dislike all graffiti, and I'd rather they liked it, otherwise I have to stop painting it ;-)

People don't want to look at / remember bombs? That's bullshit. Why do we have rememberance day & why do people pack the cinemas for war films. If he'd come out & said that he was reclaiming his patch i'd think fair enough, but all this heroic protecting the locals from images they don't want to see sounds like bollocks to me. Having been blown up by a bomb myself I find it hard to believe that 50 years on anyone would find looking at a stenciled cartoonish bomb on a wall remotely disturbing.

I just never saw banana suits and always thought it was yonks old when i saw it on the web etc. I remember the pulp going down and then random graff on there and then the piece thats up there now. Never ever saw the suits. And I couldn't for the life of me think he could have painted that after the pulp if you know what I mean. Maybe it was up for just a matter of weeks/months, poss?

Nice to have a discussion about Banksy's work for a change.
I dont know why he painted the suits after the original, I remember discussion at the time, saying there was doubt if it was Banksy, mainly because the suits was a far weaker image, even Banksy posted this on his web site.
I know which one i prefer.

Graffiti beef has always happened. But it's more public nowadays because of the internet. Graffiti/stencil artists with websites... isn't it sorta ridiculous? What happened to anonymity and outsmarting the authorities? Times have changed..
You guys should handle it oldschool style. Just keep ruthlessly going over each other until you meet up accidentally one night on a dark street, then you'll either 1. throw down (with one or both of you getting beat up pretty good) or 2. have a truce and become "friends"...
