'Rival' blamed for attack on Banksy art
nlnews@archant.co.uk 27 February 2008
AN ICONIC piece of artwork by street artist Banksy has been vandalised for the sixth time.
The stencilled image on a wall called "Gallery Attendant" in Martineau Street, Highbury, was crudely whitewashed over and the stencilled words "All the Best" and "Vida" - Spanish for "life" - were written in red alongside it.
Banksy's stencil of a girl being snatched by a metal arm coming out of a bank machine in Rosebery Avenue, Clerkenwell, and the image of a maid on the corner of Regent's Park Road and Chalk Farm Road, Camden, have also suffered a similar fate.
One of the mysterious Banksy's creations was recently sold for over ยฃ200,000 on auction website eBay.
It is believed that it is vandalism by a rival known as "Vida".
In November, Islington Council's graffiti teams were ordered to preserve and even repair Banksy's artwork in response to calls from residents. Councillor Lucy Watt (Liberal Democrat), deputy leader of Islington Council and executive member for environment, said: "Many people in Islington consider Banksy's work as art and want it preserved for as long as possible.
"Although we don't have an official policy on this, we've responded on a case by case basis, restoring several of them when they have been tagged.

Rival attacks Banksy art?, by scavos on Mar 2, 2008 1:12:49 GMT 1, If I was Banksy, I'd be going around potential ebay targets and whitewashing them myself. He must be gutted that whole fucking walls are being sold in his name. It flies in the face of what he's about. Silky's got the header spot on and expect to see a Banksy street piece reflecting the sentiment sometime soon. I'd want to take ownership of the work and destroy/deconstruct it if I so pleased.
Thankfully respect for street work still exists, as is evident in the amount out there that remains untouched for us all to enjoy. The thing is, (and as much as I hate to say it) surely none of it was done to last forever so lets enjoy it while we can and that is the nature of the beast.
As for councils protecting work, whilst I hate mindless tagging (trains & buses etc.), I love to see something that says what I feel and I get a tad concerned when anti-establishmentarianism becomes embraced by the establishment. That said, if it means I can see urban art for a bit longer, could you knowledgeable and powerful politicians and demi-gods please humour us just that bit more thoroughly?

Wise words
Work being tagged, buffed or decaying is an integral part of graff. Part of the challenge for artists to step up a notch, to scout better locations and execution.
Banksy buffing his own work is not only genius, but expected. He may be the most talked about man in the artworld and beyond but I'm sure he's not lost sight of the fact that we live in a world of war, aids and famine. Especially when some cunt is trying to sell a wall for 250k.
All walls for sale should be defaced by artist or by anyone with a passion for the genre

Exactly what statue are you talking about?
Not the BOGOF 'The Drinker', I hope. If so, then you've got your facts completely wrong.
