Simple they are beautiful! I hate the whole 'inner meaning' bullshit...at the end of the day it is solely up to you as an individual to interpret (or not) the art or anything in the life. The way the art talks to you could be absolutely foreign language to other one...so fuck it. The main thing for me is if I like it (quality, technique, execution...) That is me the rest I leave to 'critics'

I agree motor, art can certainly attract a hell of a lot of needless prattle.

I agree! However, do you ever play devils advocate with yourself and feel like it's a little odd to have people spend thousands of dollars to be able to hang this statement on their walls(as micallef does), or pay thousands to hang it on our walls (as we do)?

I disagree.. if you're interested in art, images, religion, politics, whatever.. it's your responsibility to get out there and find out a bit more about it. Pointless remaining ignorant about art if that's what your collecting.

It attracts a hell of a lot of needless prattle.
Some understanding is obvious, but in art it really can over the top, take the recent article in the Guardian for example, he has the odd point, but really it's just his opinion and there will a dozen or more counter arguments which will start to add up to a load of needless prattle.
Banksy's art is pretty straight forward.

CBL - I think the central theme of the Guardian article you refer to is that Banksy's work is a little too straight forward.

My point exactly, how many words should it take? there was a lot of needless prattle in that article.

what are the laz micallefs about, by paulah on Jul 9, 2007 21:18:44 GMT 1, I just noticed something really odd on the Laz site... If you look at the Micallef originals it has the Light Angel Bombers 1 and 2 - but they are numbered the opposite way round to the POW prints.
Mistake??!!

what are the laz micallefs about, by absyrd on Jul 9, 2007 21:30:30 GMT 1, I don't understand why you'd think it needs "inner meaning".
There are a million reasons why art can be attractive. Can't you appreciate something just for its colors? Style? Lighting? Space? And on and on...
Micallef's style is what catches my eye, and not necessarily anything he may be trying to say as the majority of everything has all been said before.

what are the laz micallefs about, by Coach on Jul 9, 2007 22:45:13 GMT 1, i think that there are loads of images that i like but which may have little meaning or a meaning that i dont necessarily empathise with. then there are loads of images where i empathise with what i percieve to be the meaning but dont find the image that pleasing. then there are pieces where the aesthetics of the image and what i think the meaning to be collide - and then you have a piece that i thinks amazing. then i want it! its not enough that i think the colours or skill are good. thats why banksy (and micallef) appeal to me. and, with pieces like micallefs, i do want to think - whats it about? - and unless i'm told its about something specific, i'm happy to go with what I think its about.

what are the laz micallefs about, by irf2112 on Jul 10, 2007 12:20:14 GMT 1, I can understand why Micallef's work is valued at what it is. But I cant understand all the 'hoo-haa' (had to compete with 'needless prattle' by CBL) about Dan Baldwins work. I find it unoriginal and attempting to be controversial just for the sake of controversy. Didnt mean to take the thread in a new direction - but hey thats art for you.

I don't own a Baldwin just for that same reason.
And I believe you are staying on topic just fine.

what are the laz micallefs about, by daz205 on Jul 10, 2007 16:56:50 GMT 1, ok i agree not all art has to mean something and i`m a keen collector of micallefs work but i find it hard to believe that people will spend nearly 5k on a print just because it looks pretty? i like pretty things but i`m sure i could get alot more for 5k than a pretty picture. The reason i asked the question was micallefs work always seems to have a meaning except for these mega expensive prints. i would have thought that expensive, small, high qualitity editions from an established artist would actually be something more that a pretty print to brighten up the wall
