Its hilarious seeing americans finally catching onto the urban art thing. Its like a new toy to them (not referring to the orig us members here). Back in the day there was not a peep on ebay.com of any urban art. Problem is they are about 3-4 years to late. Im gona quote myself from a year ago, if i can find it.. that refers to exit through the gift shop and how that will open up the same old routines all over again. These artists have squeezed every last drop out of the UK. Now its the states. Next stop in 3-4 years will be china... And you can quote that. Prime example was the nick walker show and now this. Rewind about 18 months to the last dface show in NY... Quiet as a fart in space. Its all rehashed. Lichtenstein was being done by D pre brighton show. Look up f**k lichtenstein from 2005. Skulls are from 2007 and wings are from ny in 2009. Books are over a year old as well. Put it all together in the states... And hey presto... A new show. Told you so. tinyurl.com/Cantswearsolookatthislink

meh, i disagree....in 2006, wasn't there something like 10,000 people that went to banksy in LA? the $500 prints sold for $2k right after the show on the 'bay.....not to mention, by that time, shepard had quite the audience.
granted, i will admit it was quiet on the friday (when i went) at the banksy show, but when i went to pick up my prints on the saturday, it was slammed with hundreds of people in line to get in. word had gotten out.
nick walker at carmichael was slammed with a hundred plus people to get in before doors....wasn't that like 2007?
plus, this particular gallery (corey helford) has huge lines for nearly every show they do...also, it was an art walk of sorts in culver city with carmichael's martha cooper show, thinkspace's show, and scion's group show up the street. not to mention, there was a LOT of dface publicity on blogs for his mural and the tombstones.
to digress, i would go on a limb and say that the US's graff movement on the 70's and 80's inspired the UK graff/street artists...pop street art like haring, warhol even....to futura, stash, etc etc etc
granted we have kaws and shep on the forefront, with artists like retna coming up, and the UK has a myriad of artists who have come up large already.
lastly, it was a cheap print, affordable to most anyone, so 5 out of 75 on the bay a few days later isn't THAT bad.
so to say that the US jumped on a bandwagon of sorts isn't a fair assessment of the dface show's popularity.
sorry to ramble, damn cold medicine.

Yeah not referring to the art.. Why would we be talking about the art? Ssshhh.
Talking about people lining up to make a buck. And the brigade.

another thing about US (los angeles) art shows....drinking age is 21, high school/college kids are on a budget, open bars, don't card for ID.....kids go to hang, have a drink, socialize, all for free.

DFace "Going Nowhere Fast" Corey Helford, 9th Apr, by Wearology on Apr 12, 2011 2:00:59 GMT 1, I went to go rent a car in Boston the other day and noticed a wall with Shep's work all over it - I said to the guy behind the counter did you see Shep put up that mural - the guy said to me - Shep had a team of 20 people with him and there is also a Banksy down the street. It was the 1st time in America that I ever had a conversation and someone talked to me assuming that we both knew who Banksy was.

That is not what I am implying at all - I was just simply stating that is was really cool to have a conversation about art with a complete stranger and refer to guys like Obey & Banksy like they were household names.

I would say that the majority of people anywhere would be oblivious to urban art, esp graffiti.
Their reaction would most likely be to get it removed - just look at how many Banksy are left in one piece. They're either taken by a small group of collectors/flippers, or they're cleaned off.

DFace "Going Nowhere Fast" Corey Helford, 9th Apr, by lifeonwalls on Apr 12, 2011 18:12:54 GMT 1, Talking about people lining up to make a buck. And the brigade. The coffee bean generation.
This is so true. There are so many new "fans" of street art that show up simply because there is money to be made. Although, I can't remember the last time I saw a D*Face piece out on the street (not counting the one on the gallery wall)...so not sure if he's still considered a 'street' artist.
Basically EXIT opened up this new world to all of the hustlers who were previously scalping tickets to Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones. All it takes is one person with a credit card now to notify his/her 'crew' of the releases to watch for, the mailing lists to get on, and the openings to hit - The Nick Walker TMA release in NYC was a perfect example of this. You had entire families lined up and groups of people who had no idea why they were even there.
I'd be a hypocrite if I said I didn't partake in the reselling of art but that has grown old and the ship has sailed. Thankfully I was able to flip enough Fairey prints to help pay for my Josh Keyes and Banksy prints which (at that time) I wouldn't have been able to afford alone.
It's almost as though a new guard of flippers, prospectors, hustlers, and scalpers have stepped in. Most message boards (expressobeans comes to mind) is now just filled with people going on and on about how much they can flip MBW prints for (guilty of this as well in the past) and it's seemingly ALL about the money.
I'd love to do a study on the % of prints that are released from certain artists that end up on a) eBay or b) someone's wall. I'd say that of all the prints released the highest % would be Banksy (mostly due to amount released) and the lowest would be MBW and Shepard.
Most Americans ARE late to the game, and if this is where it's going then it's gonna be a sad state of affairs. The money has now made it's way down to "artists" and now people think that all it takes to be the next big thing is a bigcartel page and some meaningless image mashed together.
Capitalism at it's finest in the land of opportunity.

DFace "Going Nowhere Fast" Corey Helford, 9th Apr, by chaserawr on Apr 12, 2011 19:12:35 GMT 1, America does this to everything thats "underground" usually 3-5 years late. Street Art, Drift cars, Fashion, Video games, Techno. It will eventually be so overplayed, so commercialized that it will eventually be ignored for the next thing that American marketing wants to shove down our throats. Then and only then will the real enthusiasts stay and continue to enjoy.

DFace "Going Nowhere Fast" Corey Helford, 9th Apr, by jonvespa on Apr 12, 2011 19:30:06 GMT 1, i love it how the peanut gallery all has opinions...when virtually none of you were even there. the incredible line was to get into the show, not for the print...
we got there at 5:15pm, there were four people in line, one who got there at 930am, and three others who got there shortly before us. we got there at 5:15pm because we were on a VIP list to get in at 6pm. It wasn't open to the public until 7:30pm, which is when they started to sell the prints.
The show was popular because of all the press, it was an event, and was free.
If it was JUST a print release, I could understand the commotion...but it wasn't, and MOST of the people there just wanted to go to an art show...

DFace "Going Nowhere Fast" Corey Helford, 9th Apr, by lifeonwalls on Apr 12, 2011 19:39:47 GMT 1, My comment was made more about the scene in general, not the D*Face show itself.
Which, judging by the pics, seemed like a blast. :-)

DFace "Going Nowhere Fast" Corey Helford, 9th Apr, by .dappy on Apr 12, 2011 19:53:08 GMT 1, There is the possibility that I will be offered the new Dface print for $799 incl P&P and insurance shipped to the UK.
Should I snap it up at that price? Opinions?

DFace "Going Nowhere Fast" Corey Helford, 9th Apr, by lifeonwalls on Apr 12, 2011 20:02:51 GMT 1, Only one has sold on eBay for $800 and the first flips always fetch the highest dollar. I'd wait it out a few months and pounce when the flippers start undercutting each other on eBay.

Cant stop thinking about those collages now.

I agree, this looks like a great show. Love D's initial lichtenstein "f*ck" print/poster. Can't remember to much about the BRP show far to much asahi.... didn't sohari [sorry for the wrong name, whatever happened to him?] have a couple for sale... they where lovely.... anyway looks like a fun show and good for D for creating a buzz in the USA, just my opinion, he died a bit here in the uk? ... oh and while I'm writing random thoughts didn't Nick Walker also rebuild/try to in the States after that 2 colour debacle uk show?
