Thanks des77, me +1, I have been eligible to vote for the last four elections (showing my age ha ha!) but chose not to. I have however voted in this one. Irrespective of the way this one goes I may or may not vote again.

I have voted for AV not because it is much better than first past the post but because the first past the post system has elected Governments with less than a 3rd of the national vote. In March 1974 a Labour Government was elected with less votes than the Tories! I am not in support of the Tories in any way, but even I can see that this is unfair. The Scottish system of AMS is the better system, but unfortunately it was not offered in this referendum.

I dont vote for one of the big partys, so if the system changes I may as well not bother. Just like football I have one team and thats the only one I want any hand in helping to win.

The AV system does not make it much better for smaller parties either as most people who vote for a smaller party under AV will vote for one of the bigger parties as their second or third choice and due to the fact that the smaller parties votes being redistributed it will be one of the bigger parties who actually wins in the end. Under a true proportional system such as STV and AMS, voting for a smaller party becomes legitimate and meaningful because if they get more than 5% of the vote then they will get representation in Parliament.
