Excuse me sir?, by maumau93 on May 26, 2011 12:27:22 GMT 1, hi, i just thought i would post on here to see if anyone could give me a little pointer. thanks in advance for any advice it all helps. i am just finishing college right now and am looking to go into producing some of my own artworks and was wondering if i could get any advice from people who have had experience in starting out on a minimalist budget. e.g. would it be woth me renting studio space and what sorta cost would that be?
also probably the main reason for me posting on here could anyone with any model making experience please give us a few pointers in how to make busts or more just of the head? thanks again, luke

Excuse me sir?, by balibob on May 26, 2011 13:03:14 GMT 1, I would recommend starting from home if you can. Its a hard world to break into so keep your costs down until you start selling some pieces. Either that or do a Brainwash, sell everything you own, rent a feckin huge building, hire sh!t loads of talented staff and equipment, con some world famous artists into giving you a quotable soundbite, get yourself on all the TV stations newspapers and art mags, sell the pieces for extortionate amounts and sit back and count your money.
Mmmmm might try that myself. ;D

Excuse me sir?, by elwheel on May 26, 2011 14:13:17 GMT 1, If I were you I would do another year year at college - a foundation degree in Fine and Applied Arts. That way you get to spend full modules on woodworking, welding, modelmaking, printing (screen, etching, mono, litho), photography, life-drawing, ceramics, metalworking etc...etc... And if you really enjoy that maybe do a specialist course or even degree. Don't rent studio space unless someone else is paying for it or it's commercially sustainable.

Excuse me sir?, by maumau93 on May 26, 2011 14:43:01 GMT 1, well I have decided to start my venture into the art world because of my hatred for the education system (and if I'm being honest I probably wouldn't of stayed till the end of my ND if it wasn't for EMA) i understand that it would be the wiser choice but really not sure i could do it, so i thought i would take a couple o' years out and try something different with the opportunity of still going back instead of going not enjoying it and dropping out. thanks for all the thoughts so far guys its always helpful to get others opinions.

Excuse me sir?, by idiom on May 26, 2011 14:53:09 GMT 1, I would have to agree that until you have some income coming in a studio, though desirable, is definitely a cost you can do without. A garage, shed or back room on the the other hand can usually be used rent free and has the added benefit of being close to all your local amenities...
Cheers

Excuse me sir?, by bazzj04 on May 26, 2011 15:07:16 GMT 1, Really think you need to know or have at least some type of idea what medium you are planning to use , If its 2d or 3d pieces, and idea of the space you requier and any specific equipment you are likly to need, All this would a assume determine the space and rent cost etc,

Excuse me sir?, by maumau93 on May 26, 2011 15:12:10 GMT 1, well in an ideal world i would love to do 2d and 3d but dont think i would need constant access to the equiptment as i would probably spend most of my time on 2d work by hand or computer. but allot of what i would be doing would be experimental work.

Excuse me sir?, by searchandrescue on May 26, 2011 18:17:43 GMT 1, Cane the colleges print studio while you can!!!! Use anything you get for free to build your business, do not rent a studio till you absolutely have to, keep your operational costs down to a minimum. Until people are queuing up to buy your work you don't have a market (fact) so think small and start local. If you are serious about a career in the arts then you will have to be relentless those who are successful have generally done years of training and are totally dedicated top what they do. Think of a monk or samurai ha ha! Ganbare!!! Never stop and never give in!!!!

Excuse me sir?, by maumau93 on May 26, 2011 20:23:35 GMT 1, thanks for the advice, starting to think maybe renting studio space isnt such a good idea as i doubt i would ever try make a full business out of selling art as i feel it takes some of the fun out of it and that is definitely not what i want to happen. thanks again for all the advice and hopefully i will be posting some pieces up soon for you viewing pleasure. cheers, luke
