Banksy • Tesco Petrol Bomb Poster, by sbash on Nov 30, 2020 9:59:34 GMT 1, been contacted by nick/lobster about getting refunded for the other 1 that i was sold back in 2018, i’ll update here accordingly.... imo if everyone’s refunded whose bought a print from him, that should b the end of it.... Cant disagree with this.
However, I think they need to actively seek out ALL buyers and approach them with full compensation at current prices. They should also put a recall statement up on their website for full transparency.

Also- maybe contacting the galleries they have supplied too, which I imagine amounts to a fair few posters.

Mine has been settled by Nick. He called me and quickly came to an arrangement I was happy with.
At the time I bought, auction prices were more than I'd have been willing to pay, so I don't feel robbed of the chance to buy elsewhere. I thought I'd got a good deal on a piece I liked. Turned out it wasn't. You live and learn. I've used the money to buy an original I've been eyeing up for a while.
Reading through this thread, I think some should be careful about the accusations they make. Discussing things that have actually happened is one thing, but there are a lot of legally shaky statements on here, apparently based on hunches and extrapolation. I'm not going to make any assumptions about anyone else's purchase and certainly won't make any accusations I can't prove.
I think this whole thing could very well have a significant effect on the price of Petrol Bombs. Clearly fakes are very hard to spot. Or perhaps it's more accurate to say genuine ones are very hard to spot. I certainly wouldn't even consider buying again.

Banksy • Tesco Petrol Bomb Poster, by tab1 on Nov 30, 2020 12:57:06 GMT 1, All the people getting refunds are you ripping up the posters or returning them ?
If a public statement was made more people will be aware and would flush out all the fakes , prices will temporarily plummet but will return as Without fakes on the market or being able to spot there will be very few genuine posters around Need to get stik on the case

Legally shaky statements.......? Its pretty much an anonymous Forum. Its also a Forum where members have often been accused of having multiple accounts and threads where they're effectively talking to themselves..(this is a just as fraudulent as shill bidding) The only way for potentially slanderous statements to be rid of would be for the Admin/Owner/Moderators to be more actively involved (which is how is used to be 10/12 years ago) People say what they want on here all day long. All Silky seems to care about these days is what tut is for sale on ebay (including blatant fakes) See, I said it......... back in the day this post would be removed

Just shows how much the forum helps collectors out by informing and highlighting these types of scams These scAms would go unnoticed even if buyers were refunded if not noted here , gives others the insight and to be cautious with these individuals in the future

Banksy • Tesco Petrol Bomb Poster, by tab1 on Nov 30, 2020 19:32:12 GMT 1, If the the main seller here working with the auction house truly had no knowledge that these were fakes it would be in his Best interest to have a police investigation as he has sold numerous items he would be out of pocket substantially After refunding buyers and He could recoup his loses from his supplier Of the fakes And more importantly clear his part And name as of any wrongdoing which would show in the investigation as presently speculation and rumors will grow around the events as only snippets of information disclosed here and it will save any galleries or auction houses have their reputations ruined by being linked to the sales of these fakes . Perfecting timing for bbay😬

I said exactly the same to my friend the other night when we were discussing this thread....PCO sitting back watching thinking “thank you very much” this type of thing only helps Bbay moving forward. Some buyers will be more likely to pay their premiums knowing there is 100% no issue whatsoever....

I’m not sure I can see Bbay selling posters, mugs and stickers. I’m sure they have their work cut out authenticating numbered (and signed) editions....?!

It is a business interest , if people are willing to pay 3k for fire bomb , 6 k for monkey parliament and soupcans £1.5 k They could raise £240000 just alone for charging £60 for coas for just those 3 posters , throw in all the other authorised posters potentially over a million pounds in fees could be raised
Not sure but the new fees may be higher ? So greater amount may be raised and would clear all the crap from the market

How could you assign a coa to something that has no distinguishing marks? Unless they number/mark them as they go?
There’s easier ways for Banksy to make £240k if that’s the driver.

I would tend to disagree with them having their work cut out authenticating prints......I would say they have been deliberately taking their time issuing COA’s to try and prevent the market from becoming flooded. Majority of buyers tend to purchase prints that have the accompanying COA. I waited over 4 months for a COA earlier this year and name changes also taking their time.......

I see it a bit like the antiques road show.... as in an auction House has a duty of care through it's inherent expertise and experience base, after all it's their primary job to sift out the good from the bad. just like the antiques road show. The punters are not the experts, they are merely the enthusiasts. The expect a Gallery or an auction house to be the AUTHORITY on matters of authentication and legitimacy of the art in question.
An auction house has the advantage of seeing many, many hundreds of similar prints and as it is their field of expertise, it is ABSOLUTELY their job to know the good from the bad. This is a MAJOR MAJOR failing on their part, whoever is ultimately responsible for this. I'm afraid the buck stops with the auction house.

Thats why an investigation will clear things up
One person may have had contacts within the auction house as from reading here one person selling these privately works for tate auctions also ? So could bypass normal checks , happens more frequently than would assume.amongst traders their word counts above a average seller , the saying buying a seller . Loads of questions to be raised , which would be cleared up by a fraud investigation .currently alot of sales and commissions to be lost by all involved

Banksy • Tesco Petrol Bomb Poster, by sbash on Nov 30, 2020 23:30:37 GMT 1, Cant disagree with this. However, I think they need to actively seek out ALL buyers and approach them with full compensation at current prices. They should also put a recall statement up on their website for full transparency. current pricing is absurd imo, as i bought a poster at several hundred pounds 2yrs ago, now he’s supposed to pay me back several thousand? that’s ridiculous.... this thread alone is damming enough, no need to financially cripple an individual and shutter an auction house over it.... i’m a reasonable man, like i said, i’d like my purchase price refund from 2018 as soon as possible, when/if that occurs, i find the matter on my end closed.... Again, I hear you. But if you were one of those investory types, you'd be mighty pissed off and at considerable financial loss through no fault of your own.
These guys are, or certainly should be insured for exactly this kind of scenario. I have no bad intentions toward them, this is simply a situation that is their responsibility to resolve in a professional manner. This is exactly why they have insurance... It was/is their responsibility to ensure they sell what they state they are selling and not a fake counterfeit regardless of innocence on their part.

Banksy • Tesco Petrol Bomb Poster, by LJCal on Nov 30, 2020 23:31:39 GMT 1, I know the guys at Tate Ward and I don’t believe they would knowingly sell fakes, they have always been very trustworthy to deal with and I’ve never had any issues buying or selling. I bought one of these and they contacted me directly to offer a full refund which for me shows their willingness to resolve the situation positively. A fair criticism is that they should have been more diligent however if everyone gets a refund and lessons are learned and mistakes not repeated then they should be given the benefit of the doubt in my view. I’ll continue to do business with them as I’m fully confident this was an honest and hopefully isolated mistake.

And to be honest everyone is buying banksy on the premise of being an investment piece. Why else would a £5 poster attract bids over £3k , if just the image you could buy advertised fakes at £30 . Agree with refund at purchase price but would not put business their way again Guys that have had refunds from tate auctions , have you sold items through them or purchased banksy prints previously ?

I’m glad you got your refund but they didn’t contact you 2 months ago when I brought it to their attention did they. Only now when I bring it to the attention of many buyers on a public forum.
If I hadn’t made this post do you think you’d have been given a refund? Or do you think you would still believe you owned a genuine poster that was going up in value?
Yes it’s great that hopefully everyone gets their money back but it should never have happened in the first place. And definitely not have continued after it had been flagged with them.

Just, why, a great friend of me, even not a specialist, just a connoisseur and collector, known at the first glance that he has received a fake and asked for a refund ?! So they know ! Who ? I don’t know .. I, simply quidam, reckon, without pretentiousness, recognize most of the fakes : light, colors, too much brighteness or too mate , taint... but it’s when you are touching the paper that you know. And to finish, in Art market, there are the serious customers first, les “ habitués “, with big pockets, vip ? , the friends and family, and.. unfortunately for them.. the others ! People, buyers.. some buying with confidence, others don’t even know

Banksy • Tesco Petrol Bomb Poster, by daniel3886 on Dec 1, 2020 0:55:37 GMT 1, Today we began contacting all buyers of Petrol Bomb Posters that have been purchased Via Tate Ward to offer an inspection against a reference copy to confirm weather genuine or fake then issue a full refund as requested by the client. We will pay refunds immediately and take up the matter with the consigners separately.
On behalf of myself and the team I want to apologise wholeheartedly for this situation. Our reputation is of the upmost importance to us and anything that diminishes it or brings into question our expertise and knowledge is something we take very seriously. Problems are going to occur whilst running a business, for me how they are addressed is the true measure of those involved.
On a personal note, Nick has been my business partner for 3 years and during that time he has always acted with the highest levels of integrity. I know any poster he has sold privately will be refunded if found to be fake or at the buyers request. I do not believe for one moment he had any prior knowledge that the posters were not genuine.
The poster in our current sale comes with email provenance from Jo Brooks I’m 100% sure it’s genuine and inspection is welcome in person at any point prior to the sale on 9th December.
The dedication has been changed on the 10 x Di faced tenners and book it’s actually dedicated from “Team Laz” not Steve Lazarides’s himself. The notes have been checked under a x10 loop and are genuine. Again inspection is welcome anytime pre sale.
