Top 10 most expensive paintings ever sold , by lee3 on Jun 7, 2011 19:04:28 GMT 1, It's worth noting that those are compiled only from auction sales and widely reported private transactions not that I'm suggesting there is any better method. However, the number of unreported private transactions dwarfs the number of reported sales. IOW, there are numerous very high priced paintings sold that are never reported as such. Christie's and Sotheby's both specialize in brokering such transactions and over the years there have been plenty of whisper sales that would top that list. It makes one wonder how many of those 10 paintings would indeed crack the top 10 though obviously impossible to measure. Lastly, one should presume that the reported sales prices (non auction prices) are signficantly higher than the amount of cash that actually changed hands as it's often in both parties interest to do so if they are comfortable going out to the public with such details.

Don't like Pollock's stuff; good that Warhol changed the game.
Think his stuff looks quite uninspired and pale compared to the works of the other artists on that list (Picasso, van Gogh, Klimt etc).
IMHO of course !
