While I haven't tried this myself, one option could be the following:
1. Purchase small-sized, acid-free, transparent photo corners.
These ones manufactured by The Photo Album Company are apparently about 1 cm in length. They can be found on Amazon and eBay for £1.35 for a pack of 250:

2. With a sharp pair of dissecting scissors, cut back part of the normally-exposed corners — to resemble Lineco Slimline mounting corners:

[The Lineco Slimline mounting corners are 3.175 cm in length, so perhaps less discreet than what you require. They're also quite expensive, and would be difficult to get hold of in the UK.]

Thanks for the post, funnily enough I have considered doing something like this but think the trimming on the smaller corners won't offer enough purchase/support. I think I'll just try a couple of different products and see who makes the more discreet ones or try a hack with some fine cellophane folded onto the backing board..
