I can't speak for what the Bristol Museum did with the Banksy exhibit, but every major museum I have ever visited in the world has charged an admission/donation of some amount. It's how they keep their doors open and the lights on ...
Nevertheless, I think it is quite a gesture from Banksy to front the costs of admission on Mondays for the remainder of the exhibition. Cheers to him/her/them!

Banksy Sponsors FREE entry to MOCA ., by waltercrunk on Jun 10, 2011 1:45:53 GMT 1, The entry fee is only $10. You're paying to keep the lights and air conditioning running in a pretty massive space. Not to mention the employees wages. That money has to come from some where.
If you really think about it, $10 is nothing compared to the amount of work witnessed in 1 space.

Quite a lot don't, including 2 of my favourites, the British Museum and the Natural History Museum in London and you don't get much more major or awesome than those. On the art front, there are also major museums that don't charge, such as the Tate Modern or the National Gallery, except for some specific exhibitions (again, both pretty major). I think there may be less free options in The USA, so perhaps if you're stateside that's why the different experience.

It is true that most major art museums in the U.S. seem to charge admission/donation. I may be mistaken, but I seem to recall paying an admission/donation to visit both the Tate and British Museum, but then again that was many moons ago so maybe things have changed or my memory has gone to hell. I do know that two of my other favorite museums, the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, charge an admission.
All said and done, I think the exhibition is worth the admission. But it is even better to be able to view for free ...

Banksy Sponsors FREE entry to MOCA ., by kalm on Jun 10, 2011 2:44:30 GMT 1, I don't get some people's thought process sometimes. So every Museum, (institutions that collect, safeguard and make accessible artifacts and specimens, which they hold in trust for society) should be free so YOU can use to inspire and educate yourself? What about the Board of Trustees, Director, Curators, Engineers, Staff, Maintenance and Laborers that ensure a safe exposition and provenance of The Art? Fuck em'? And, Artists should volunteer their hard earned interpretations, (ART) of the world around/inside of us? After not only taking the HUGE risk involved in full time dedication to a craft, but the unfathomable amount of hours spent honing/analyzing their works?
$10(<£8?) sounds like a bargain to me! Or you could have just flown around the World seeing it for yourself...oh wait...

Banksy Sponsors FREE entry to MOCA ., by kalm on Jun 10, 2011 2:50:15 GMT 1, And for those MAJOR MUSEUMS that do not charge entrance fee's...they're certainly not doing it out of the kindness of their hearts, (Sans Banksy Mondays)...they're either writing it off as a charitable donation, (aka the "Lower Class" who couldn't afford such a collection) or have some very deep pockets jockeying for ownership &/or Exhibit stops.
Ohhh the irony of Art's life cycle...born from necessity and collected by the wealthy

There's no argument or complaint here, not on my part anyway. I was simply pointing out in response to someone else, that there are some very big/prestigious museums around that you can just through without paying. I am happy to pay a fee to see any exhibition I'm excited about and agree with your 1st comment.... These places do all have staff and bills to pay. I always end up spending money in the "free" museums too, either in their overpriced gift shops on trinkets or buying a cuppa tea and a slice of cake.

Banksy Sponsors FREE entry to MOCA ., by balibob on Jun 10, 2011 10:38:22 GMT 1, I love free museums but they have to cover costs, so if I want to see an exhibition I'm happy to pay if need be. Either way, its either charge by admission for those who go thru the door, or charge through taxation, which everyone who works pays for whether they want to visit the building or not. Cases for both arguments I think. Good on Mr B for his gesture.

Banksy Sponsors FREE entry to MOCA ., by Warm Gun on Jun 10, 2011 16:45:40 GMT 1, Street art is called street art for a reason, why the f**k is it in a museum in the first place. In my opinion it's a shame that any so called street artists got involved with this project, that includes Banksy....then again I'm sure there was plenty of money to be made

IMO....
This show was street art/graff coming full-circle
While i imagine the Artists involved have never been waiting for this show to happen, it must be nice to finally be recognized as serious artists rather than dismissed as vandals
I think this was a very brave show to put for both the curators and all the artists involved. Damned if they damned if they don't....
People don't like paying to view great art in what are often some of the best buildings in the city they are in??

Banksy Sponsors FREE entry to MOCA ., by Warm Gun on Jun 10, 2011 17:56:34 GMT 1, I don't think street art has come full circle at all otherwise it would be all about profiteering and products and fame and new prints and museum shows....ah wait, it is, maybe you're right. Should artists who illegally vandalise the streets then seek recognition and a source of income for their misdemeanors? doesn't that defy the whole point?
I don't like the taste this show leaves in my mouth, this whole museum homage to street art doesn't seem to sit right with me. I think I used to understand the whole need for an artist to show their work off, to hit a bland wall with a colourfull art work, to leave a mark, to beautify, to express, make people smile, be a bit rebellious and all that crap, now all I see is artists using the medium as an instant platform to fame and fortune. Maybe there's nothing wrong with that, we all have to start somewhere......I don't bloody know.
I tell you one thing that does make me want to puke though.......when a so called street artist spends years pumping out work under a street name but then, after a while, drops that name and starts promoting themselves under their own name in an effort to be taken more seriously.....what a load of old bollocks that is!.....I've seen it quite a few times now.
Graff is for the streets not a museum or gallery.

Do artists need to eat/pay rent/mortgage provide for family?
Where are all the profits and products from this show coming from exactly? I would buy a few bits in a heartbeat without thinking they had sold out. Only spraying on the streets? Times move on with either adapt accordingly or stand still
I would save the knickers in a twist for some of the blatant manipulation that occurs here, rather than getting bent out of shape over a bunch of legends putting together a show that celebrates the culture they have moved in for 20-30 years

Banksy Sponsors FREE entry to MOCA ., by Warm Gun on Jun 10, 2011 18:16:06 GMT 1, I neither have my 'knickers in a twist' nor am I 'bent out of shape' (whatever that means). We all know who the c**ts on this site are (many of them prominant members who never seem to get questioned or doubted) but you're right, it is amazing how so many of them get away with what they do.
You've talked me right round now cg, all museums and galleries should have a street art section for us ruffians, mouths need to be fed and air conditioning needs to be paid for. We should all become street artists before we get left behind.

Banksy Sponsors FREE entry to MOCA ., by curiousgeorge on Jun 10, 2011 18:28:31 GMT 1, My point is as a member here and being caught up Subway Art way back, I see people putting years in on the streets now earning a living as a totally natural progression
Why should they go and do 9-5 in something they hate if they can earn a living doing what they have always loved? Should that really be frowned upon?
Clue me on on who the bad guys are in because frankly i don't have a clue who is who on here anymore(save for a handful)
How do you feel about the Banksy/Seen collab from the LA show? (just curious)
Damn the edit function
