Japanese paper hing problem, by sal on Jun 29, 2011 19:07:09 GMT 1, does anyone has any experience with framing prints using japanese paper hinges?!..
Ive decided to DIY frame few things using float mount method, so I read a lot about it, and I recently bought this museum mounting kit (http://www.preservationequipment.com/Store/Products/Conservation-Materials/Mounting-$4-Framing/Museum-Mounting-Kit).. I just tried it out on a page from a magazine, and Im far from happy with the result - the part of the paper that had wheat paste applied on got all ripply cause of the water in the paste (no matter if I used blotter piece or not)..
now, I know magazine paper is way thinner than any print would be, but Im still scared on having the same effect on my Eine, Invader, Murakami, and other stuff Im planning to frame..
so, do you think thicker papers wont have this effect?!.. also, do you have any advice how to soak out as much water/moisture as possible?!... or you have a simple guess about what Im doing wrong!?...
thanks in advance for all the useful ideas, comments, suggestions, etc...

Japanese paper hing problem, by curiousgeorge on Jun 29, 2011 20:00:30 GMT 1, What is the consistency of the paste you have made? (you also need a tiny amount)
What are you using to apply it? Make up brushes work very well ,will check with mrs the name of the exact brush i stole from her
You can buy art paper in a4 sheets which you could practise on, don't stress out because magazine paper is in no way a fair comparison

Japanese paper hing problem, by sal on Jun 29, 2011 20:23:42 GMT 1, thanks for your msg George.. it already makes me feel better..
well, I dont know how to describe the consistency of the paste.. it reminds me of hair gel (if that makes any sense).. as for the amount I applied, I nicely soaked up the area I was "gluing", so might over did that (seeing that I should use tiny amount).. as for the brush, Im using synthetic brush for acrylics and watercolors (it feels pretty fine, so I guess that should be ok)..
if you have any tips on making the right paste, please let me know.. I read couple of instructions varying from "put it in microwave for 30sec and wait until it cools" (which is basically what I did), to this specific instructions for which Id have to have a small lab @ home...
getting art paper for practice is definitely a good idea...
thanks once again!

Japanese paper hing problem, by curiousgeorge on Jun 29, 2011 21:00:46 GMT 1, I find paste nice to work with when mixed a little thicker than icing (for a cake)
Once you get some paper to practise on write on them each one going from a stiff paste down to diluted one if that makes sense(stiff +5/10/15ml), I like the brush the same width as the hinge and apply the paste in one movement.Have a table lamp to hand and watch the paste lose it's gloss and start to go cloudy, for me no gloss at all is optimal.
Again write on the practise sheets, hinge dry(before applying) for 1 minute,2 minute etc, etc. This way you will find the formula that works best for you. Are you using deionized water?

Japanese paper hing problem, by iamzero on Jan 3, 2012 19:48:33 GMT 1, Great thread this. It would be nice if someone actually made a Youtube video for this and for floatmounting instead of the rubbish on there.
I'm guessing it's not gonna happen as the framers don't want you to know how simple this probably is, although I thermoweld vinyl floors for a living and have shown many blokes many times how it done and most still can't get it so it's not as if it's some mystical artform.
