UK buyer; US seller - how to buy protected?, by hlarmy on Jul 5, 2011 7:35:32 GMT 1, I'm in need of some advice; I am in discussions with a US seller to purchase quite a high value painting. What is the safest way for me to do this to make sure I'm protected - I want to make sure I'm fully covered if the guy does a runner with the painting or if it is damaged in transit etc?! What does paypal cover you up to; does eBay offer any protection; is there a better way of doing this, such as Escrow etc etc.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

If damaged in transit you need insurance from the Shipper you are responsible for this unless agreed otherwise. eg a long as it arrives in however many pieces.
So you need to insure as damage is an insurance claim.
If it arrives and you do not like etc etc not the condition you thought etc etc there is no comeback.
Then paypal does not cover as long as it arrives.
Fake is different there is a come back
Thats as far as I know slightly diff rules if you buy through ebay

Paypal scares the f*ck out of me as I've heard of so many stories where claims have been turned down and/or it's so difficult to claim that you may as well not bother.
Does anyone know whether there is a maximum compensation they will offer, and whether they is anything you need to do to make sure you are covered (ie. I believe if you send payment as a gift, you're not covered - is this right?).

They do have to be authorized etc. I do not use it a lot but have done. Gifts are not the same as they are technically not for goods or something someone told me but not sure.

Re: Damage, your going to have to make the call on insured shipping versus customs charge although you should be able to claim back at a lower vat rate if original painting. Also check out the shipping small print as lots dont cover artwork either at all or to a value limit.
