Obey Shipping - Still fucked, by gbh on Jan 17, 2007 20:04:46 GMT 1, Obey Shipping - Still fucked
I order some prints from Obey, check out the email conversation after they arrive.
Hi Guys, My order finally arrived today, thank you. The tube has been badly damaged and all prints in side are effectively screwed. I have attached some photo's taken with my phone for your review. How can we go about rectifying this situation? Claimable with UPS? I would very much like replacements. Please advise at your earliest convenience. Judd Howie
THEIR RESPONSE
Hi there,
Unfortunately things that are shipped internationally are not insured. We ship through USPS (United States Postal Service) on all international orders. We also declare the posters at a low value (to help our customers keep the customs cost low) but because of this we can't really insure it for more than we claimed the value to be. You might be able to contact USPS to see what they can do for your.
Thanks, Andy
Now, is it just me or is that an especially piss poor response? Especially when there are comments like this plastered all over their order site:
Due to insurance policies OBEY GIANT ART can ONLY ship to addresses that are provided by PAYPAL
and
We cannot ship to any other address as that order will not be covered under our insurance
Any suggestions? This is seriously crap.

Obey Shipping - Still fucked, by zippyblip on Jan 17, 2007 20:47:16 GMT 1, UH OH..........I am awaiting some Obey stuff right now- I actually emailed them to ask about the USPS shipping number as it didn't work and they replied "USPS tracking numbers are rarely accurate".....not too informative.
Will let you know if they make it- no sign yet......

Obey Shipping - Still fucked, by lesroy on Jan 17, 2007 22:31:09 GMT 1, This is such a shame... I cannot beleive they will not even replace the prints!!
Do you mind me asking how much you paid for the prints? Coz I cannot imagine they were cheap.
We should all drop them an email saying how disgusted we are... does obey not want to sell prints to people outside the US anymore? I have to admit that this is the only reason I have not bought Obey stuff before...
Really sorry to hear about this gbh, but let us know if you want a job lot reply from the members of the Banksy forum, I for one, am in!

Obey Shipping - Still fucked, by BK83 on Jan 17, 2007 22:41:49 GMT 1, Very sorry to hear that Gbh -- I am disgusted that that is all ObeyGiant had to say about the matter. Especially with the way Shep and Obey are pumping out the prints like its a fucking third world factory over there! As if they can't help you out with replacements! what shit. I really like Obey, but my appreciation is definately waning!

Telephine them, if that fails then start a claim with paypal or your credit card company. Goods damaged, their responsibility surely.

Obey Shipping - Still fucked, by scud80 on Jan 17, 2007 22:58:06 GMT 1, i would contact them and request a refund, and claim through paypal if they don't offer one. their shipping has been much better in the states recently (prints shipped out the very next day after ordering, and in better tubes than they used before). i know they don't keep extra unnumbered prints to send out as replacements, like pow apparently does.

Obey Shipping - Still fucked, by gbh on Jan 17, 2007 23:31:53 GMT 1, well, good result.
As I'm sure you can imagine, I replied to them with a well crafted email (that shall not be posted here).
I received the below response.
I will send you replacements. But just for your information in all cases of damaged items it is the customers responsibility to report it. UPS will not even let us report a claim without speaking with the customer first. The reason is that the customer is the one who has the damaged items in their possession. I have never had to file a damage claim with USPS so this is my first time dealing with this situation. We normally claim the value of the posters a very low to keep the customs duties low but I see now why this isn't a good idea.
Your replacements will be sent shortly.
Thanks, Andy
Result I suppose. Glad I responded rather than just laying back and thinking of Australia

Obey Shipping - Still fucked, by mido on Jan 18, 2007 1:35:31 GMT 1, just as a follow up comment (I don't get to keep up with threads often) I would say
1) The beauty of being the artist/distributor is that if something is damaged / lost you can replace it without hassle. that's why POW, Obey, Aquarium can afford to send them out with RELATIVELY poor inner packaging. As a private seller of course you can't just replace prints, so IMHO should be much more careful (i wrap mine in tissue paper, then brown paper, then bubble wrap, and get the strongest tube I can find)
2) Obey don't always put a lower price than normal on their customs forms (N.B. remember that most of their prints have been $30 - about ยฃ18! - so little need to lie). I once had to pay VAT on an Obey order because customs got it...
3) Any business(even a so-called anti-capitalist / anti-establishment business) should treat their customers with golden gloves, and not just deny any responsibility.
Anyway, good result. Hope they are in good condition next time (Obey tubes are flimsy!)

Obey Shipping - Still fucked, by pastiepie on Jan 18, 2007 1:56:56 GMT 1, I don't know about the UK but incoming post to Australia is devoid of all import duties unless the package is worth over $1000AUD. In that case the reciever is then charged an additional 10% on the value of the item.
So unless you were importing over 20 prints you will never be charged. Of course most of the time these items "slip through the net" anyway. I wasn't charged any duties on my Grannies print.

Obey Shipping - Still fucked, by mido on Jan 18, 2007 2:28:55 GMT 1, I wish it was so in the UK...
I've had to pay import charges twice.
It says on the charge form "Goods imported into the EU with a value of over ยฃ18, or ยฃ36 in the case of gifts, are subject to customs charges"

Appreciate the kind sentiment crew, very much. Order was $300 USD.
Looks like they have come to their senses after my email, for that I am thankful. As a result, I think they will be changing the way they work a little...or so they say. At least they are moving forward/improving..I suppose...
They are replacing my order with crispy new prints. They were kind enough to let me hold on to the dinged up prints. My teenage nephews will love them, creased or not and as a result, I will be the main man for them by giving them such cool gear from birthdays, etc. 8+)
I'm sort of torn between two lovers over this situation. I want to hate them but I also just one one of the new prints in their recent competition. Ah well, if the comp print turns up and it's crap, I'll hate them proper then!
Appreciate the support from all you guys (and ladies of course (Hi GM!))here.

Obey Shipping - Still fucked, by gbh on Jan 18, 2007 15:25:53 GMT 1, side note: I ordered a set of 3 faces in my order and three prints were delivered but two were the same. 2 x 1 face, 1 x another face. Lucky the tube got crushed I guess, give them a chance to send the right stuff this time. Is there just too much gear being smoked in these print houses around the world?

Obey Shipping - Still fucked, by dadclot on Jan 22, 2007 12:08:26 GMT 1, I've also experienced problems with Obey in the past. I ordered the Wooster Special Ed of Post No Bills which never arrived. Really poor communication from them, took ages to get a response. Had to battle hard to get a refund, which because of Paypal transaction charges, meant that overall I was a couple of quid down and hadn't actually received anything at all!
I bought Supply and Demand direct from the website recently, since it's the only place that sells copies signed by Shepard, it took an age to come and was a little damaged when it did, bashed in around the corners. Knowing what they're like and the fact that I couldn't get one signed by Shepard anywhere else, I didn't even bother raising it with them.
For what appears to be such a big operation, you'd think that they'd have got it a bit more right by now.
