WHAT CONSTITUTES AN ORIGINAL (IN YOUR OPINION)?, by alexnh123 on Jul 22, 2011 14:41:37 GMT 1, ...and why does paper get such a raw deal!
Print or stencil on wood or canvas gets called an original when the same on paper just gets print status or similar, - can't be right surely. And then when you have hand finishing in the mix? a 1 of 1 print on paper surely constitutes an original?
what are your thoughts?

WHAT CONSTITUTES AN ORIGINAL (IN YOUR OPINION)?, by alexnh123 on Jul 22, 2011 16:34:25 GMT 1, i would agree. And i'm not a great one for differentiating between paper and canvas in that arguement... i think people have it in there head that canvas means a premium piece of work, old fashioned attitude to things...

I think some mediums lend themselves better to paints than others, for example i would personally choose a well stretched and primed canvas over a piece on wood or even cardboard
I also see artists putting an original on canvas and then on metal and then on glass, again personally this detracts from 'original'
In a nutshell 'one of a kind' JMO

WHAT CONSTITUTES AN ORIGINAL (IN YOUR OPINION)?, by alexnh123 on Jul 22, 2011 17:01:22 GMT 1, one offs is a good way to distinguish, i agree. For me it's the almost quick dismissal of one-off works on paper that bothers me. They too are credible in their own way, and i'm a big supporter of hand finished prints, in many ways they deserve to be elevated from meer 'print' and be given some sort of 'original' points.

WHAT CONSTITUTES AN ORIGINAL (IN YOUR OPINION)?, by johnnyh on Jul 22, 2011 17:15:22 GMT 1, Think original means just that .... Obviously I suppose. But some of the prints are not originals but variations. So hand finnishing does make it unique and in someways original but I do not think this has the same status as a one of. Regardless of whether print or canvas etc. In one sense it takes a most nothing to make something unique in that no two are identical etc but that's not enough to make them an original as in one work. Regarless of medium. IMO

WHAT CONSTITUTES AN ORIGINAL (IN YOUR OPINION)?, by xmyart on Jul 22, 2011 18:19:16 GMT 1, Is there a difference between one off and original red? i would have thought its the same thing. Albeit i see the distinctions made all the time.
Also re the canvas /wood / metal etc, i still think they are all originals if 1/1 but have to say, i too would go canvas anyday!!
Good one for a bad example, i have the dface WTM colab, Ltd screen print on wood, hand finished by dface!! pic the bones out of what that is if you can.
all a bit messy eh.

WHAT CONSTITUTES AN ORIGINAL (IN YOUR OPINION)?, by johnnyh on Jul 22, 2011 18:31:16 GMT 1, Think it is a one off however is it a series of say 5 similar then it is a variation in my opinion. But think a lot of it is symantics So slot to do with rarity and value etc as opposed to what is truly unique / original or not.
I would say your D Face sorry to say is worthless but will help you out and take it off your hands. Over generous me !!!!!

WHAT CONSTITUTES AN ORIGINAL (IN YOUR OPINION)?, by xmyart on Jul 22, 2011 18:37:26 GMT 1, lol youd be lucky to prise it from my cold dead hands mate!! But your not far from wrong. Stolenspace sold them for 400£ they are going for around 150 now it seems (trust me, i bought mine last week). they were an issue of 65 but they are hand finished. i love it so dont really need to worry what category it falls into which is handy.

WHAT CONSTITUTES AN ORIGINAL (IN YOUR OPINION)?, by MGK1 on Jul 22, 2011 21:15:30 GMT 1, can someone advise me on this...i've always thought when artists do editions hand painted onto a canvas (or any other medium) that they are originals, am i wrong in thinking that? eg: the hand sprayed editions mau mau has just released

I would assume anything that's 1/1 (one off) is an original. If there's two it's not original, so wouldn't fit the criteria of an original.
Your D*Face sounds like an original as there is not another one like it.

WHAT CONSTITUTES AN ORIGINAL (IN YOUR OPINION)?, by rottenredrooster on Jul 24, 2011 13:17:50 GMT 1, I would say that originality in art is when something is created that is independent of any other art produced by that artist. I guess this would apply to two canvases of the same image but are different in colour.
Like I said a one off.
So if it's an edition of 10 but is different to all 10 then I guess you could disregard the edition and view it as a one off?

WHAT CONSTITUTES AN ORIGINAL (IN YOUR OPINION)?, by alexnh123 on Oct 14, 2011 12:42:05 GMT 1, would you rather have a 1/1 work on paper, or a small editioned work on canvas? Let's say for arguements sake we're talking about a banksy stencil here.
