Banksy Print prices to fall by 10-20%, by twinkle on Aug 11, 2011 10:41:03 GMT 1, Anyone else feel that Banksy prints (and other artists) will be some 10-20% lower over the next year? Sure we'll see a Banksy new release towards the end of 2011 creating a wave of excitemnet but if 2008 is anything to go by I think a correction in prices is overdue now.
The credit crunch saw Signed colloured Trolleys going for £1300/1400 for example (I see them nearer £2k now) and I think we'll see prices like that again, Credit Crunch 2 seems very close now. The world will have quite a lot to think about, politically and economically speaking, and perhaps crazy prices for prints might get a (much needed) reality check....
Any thoughts? T

They were constantly 1200, it wasnt until the high auction result that the price went up. I think hard times means people will just buy quality rather than folio filling

Banksy Print prices to fall by 10-20%, by Layaway Days Art Blog on Aug 11, 2011 11:08:10 GMT 1, I haven't been in the hobby long enough to judge a specific artist/print and what increases/decreases demand. I.e. would a NW 'Charming Children' release make everyone suddenly remember his old stuff and start a purchasing frenzy?
Personally, I would apply the following rule. Other than the most high end things, you can probably expect a decrease by 10-20% in 2012 on most older/more common artists/prints. Already, there are several great prints under the 6 month avg. for artists like Nick Walker. Some great deals to be had out there. TMA NYC just went for $990us. I just paid $1370 for it a month ago....dummy that I am.
Do I think 'Laugh Now' or GWB will go down, probably not. Flags or trolleys have a better chance because they are terrible hahahha (jk/ just not for me)

Banksy Print prices to fall by 10-20%, by twinkle on Aug 11, 2011 11:23:22 GMT 1, 007, nice 90's throwback!!! Agree with you and itindale too. I think the large edition newer stuff will suffer way more than the old classics. In 2008/9 it was the marginal seller that felt the pinch and set the current price at that point. I think you'll always have those who take a realistic view on that expensive piece of paper hanging on the wall and just need the cash instead. It is what it is, afterall....
Definitely see us going back to 2008/9 prices, which will "keep it real" imo

Banksy Print prices to fall by 10-20%, by Hubble Bubble on Aug 11, 2011 12:47:06 GMT 1, I'm sure the same conversation has been had about Warhol prints over the years.... and Hockney swimming pools. Whilst some might occasionally drop, they go up over time. Only question is ... does Banksy belong in this company? My gut feel is that he does and his prices - in general - will continue to rise in the long term.

Banksy Print prices to fall by 10-20%, by twinkle on Aug 11, 2011 14:45:01 GMT 1, Oh it's all pretty random I guess Boaty but I'm looking at the world and saying there is quite a lot going on and I wonder if Banksy and co matters so much to people?? When stock markets are down 15% so far, redundancies are rising, house prices are falling, rents are rising, real wages falling, taxes are higher, and that pound in your pocket doesn't go as far as it did....maybe I'm not so random afterall....
I think Banksy prints are a luxury item and I don't see why they just go higher and higher in a straight line. They definitely went down in price in 2008/9 and I think they will do that again. All those who don't feel the pinch congratulations!

Banksy Print prices to fall by 10-20%, by chaserawr on Aug 11, 2011 16:06:31 GMT 1, I honestly dont see prices going up or down. I feel that Banksy prints wont be for sale as often. Might need to save an extra few months to get the print you want but there surely wont be a bidding war. The dust needs to settle with the economy to see how art will do. The amount of sellers that bought from source for 75 quid is getting less and less so that infamous deal is becoming rarer and rarer. I think most sellers will sit tight till they get their price they want.

Banksy Print prices to fall by 10-20%, by skitchy on Aug 11, 2011 17:24:42 GMT 1, IMO there are a number of future events yet to happen that will influence prices ie
1.when/if banksy OFFICIALLY reveals himself
2. when the art market realises that there are 4-5 different variations of his signature and start to question who signed what.
3.when he passes on
I was just reading this morning some threads from 06 and 07 when £500 was too much money to pull the trigger on a signed GWB and HC. Things have got a bit out of perspective these days but thats the way it goes with art.
I think the real money will be in original canvas' in the future...

Banksy Print prices to fall by 10-20%, by Rolex on Aug 15, 2011 19:42:38 GMT 1, That didn't suprise me that it made £1600,this print is a real grower for me,makes the one on this forum last week seem cheap at circa £1k in a nice frame aswell, It just goes to show how popular this print is becoming , I can see it following the same direction as Girl With Balloon .given time. Ref ruggs post.

Banksy Print prices to fall by 10-20%, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Aug 16, 2011 1:05:38 GMT 1, The large unsigned editions seemed to go up quite a bit after the movie.. I think these will drop a bit. Also due to so more many people being into him now and probably aiming to own a signed print i don't see the signed dropping much. But hey what do i know people as stil paying over 100 quid for the petrol poster?? bonkers!!

Banksy Print prices to fall by 10-20%, by boatyb on Aug 18, 2011 19:41:06 GMT 1, was reading an insurance renewal package the other day and strangely enough it included the following statement from major insurer:
"A word about values and about your Scheduled Valuable Possession Inflation Protection...
In 2008, the price of gold hit an all time high and prices for gems and other precious metals also rose steeply. Art is now viewed by some as an alternate investment class, with values skyrocketing and statistics indicating that art keeps pace with and in some instances outperforms the stock market. Rare and collectible wine as well as other collectibles have seen similar increases...."
I found that very interesting - for insurers to make that blanket statement in their standard policies made me pause...

Banksy Print prices to fall by 10-20%, by jdwheeler on Aug 24, 2011 15:09:38 GMT 1, I think a lot of people purchase prints at this level using credit cards (or are putting other things on card and spending cash on prints).
I think you will see more distressed sales from people who can't make their payments or have a change of circumstance.
Even those who don't have debt might need to raise cash if their circumstances change.
So I see prices dropping at the margins, but I guess if you don't need to sell people will just sit tight.
This will contract supply I guess offsetting the above.
Its a lot like the housing market (until rates go up).

Banksy Print prices to fall by 10-20%, by boatyb on Aug 24, 2011 20:02:32 GMT 1, was a tad bit aggressive on my previous post above and elsewhere about "urban art" - my bad...
but, pessimism has a way of manifesting itself out of thin air, often unfairly so... let positive life live - and it will... look at bristol (incredible community effort...)
urban art and banksy etc. are more than screenprints/canvases and buy/sell etc... much more... if WE (the keepers) forget that, then, yeah...
