I'm done. Given up. Everyone here's too eager!, by dgb133 on Jul 28, 2007 0:41:31 GMT 1, I'll probably keep watching this stuff as it's pretty interesting but I'm pretty much giving up hope or desire in finding any more Banksy prints. It's lost its appeal to me and I'm really not willing to compete with peoples insane appetites and high prices. Think I'll be buying a stencil and make my own tribute pieces and that's it. Unless I somehow have a miracle and get a festival on POW?
But it astounds me with how many people just throw offers at anyone who puts a Banksy print on ebay. Not an uncommon sight:
I made some offers for unsigned prints on the forum and apparently the other members were offering prices that I would expect Andipa to charge. Well, at least several hundred more than the record high on ebay for this particular print.
Instead I'll be putting the money I set aside for Banksy towards a signed print by one of the worlds most sought after painters and an original painting by another extremely hot artist out there right now ...all for the same price as one unsigned Banksy print in an edition of 500!? I'll let you know who after I secure these works.
The odd thing is, used to be that people really coveted owning truly "limited" edition (i/e under 100 or so) and unique works much more. But I see this mentality changing here (which isn't wrong or right) But it seems to be that everyone wants to own these same prints that everyone else has. It's like joing a club when you get one. Funny...

I have my morons print which is framed and i will be happy keeping that. Continuously trying to keep abreast of the market (ebay) and watching this forum are almost like a sort of mental illness and start to take over your life, if you let it! All the best in finding the next golden goose!

I'm done. Given up. Everyone here's too eager!, by johnas on Jul 28, 2007 8:25:55 GMT 1, dgb, i'm with you all the way. i've said it before and i'll say it again, once you just free yourself and take a step back from the necessity to own a banksy, the feeling is really quite liberating.
The only way I'll own another banksy (and beejoir etc for that matter!) is by buying at source.... there's absolutely no way in this world that I will buy on the secondary market in today's current climate.... Don't get me wrong though, fair play to those that can afford secondary market prices but in the words of Duncan Bannatyne, I'm out
This doesn't mean that I am stepping back from this forum though. I'm interested in the scene as a whole and enjoy chatting with the peeps on this board and hearing people's opinions on this, that and the other
if anything, the meteroic price rises have forced me to search out more affordable artists that float my boat. I personally, do not feel comfortable splashing loads of cash on art - i find that by living by a 3 point checklist, I can keep my urges under control and side step some of the insane hype that happens here on the forum: 1) Do I LOVE the image!? 2) Can I afford it? 3) Is there somewhere to hang it? ..... if I answer No to any othese questions, then the cash stays in my pocket....
Banksy is not the be all and end all. Step back, relax and enjoy art. You don't have to own a Banksy to appreciate his work or be a member of this forum.

I'm done. Given up. Everyone here's too eager!, by Pattycakes on Jul 28, 2007 9:28:50 GMT 1, You are absolutely right, the prices are completely out of control. You can buy a Warhol for the prices that Banksy prints are selling for at the moment, that's just insane. I really do worry because it's not as though these prints are rare, and we all know that there are people out there with huge stockpiles of prints, as soon as they start selling them off the prices are sure to tumble.

I'm done. Given up. Everyone here's too eager!, by corblimeylimey on Jul 28, 2007 13:59:14 GMT 1, I'm happy to spend up to about ยฃ300 but normally around ยฃ100 or less, the only exception would be to push the boat out on a signed Banksy from source for maybe ยฃ500-ยฃ600.
Plenty of good stuff available for those prices, if I hadn't have got my Mantis All Fall Down for ยฃ125 I wouldn't have paid over ยฃ400 for one, I'd just accept I'd missed it.

I'm with you there CBL. It's difficult sometimes though...I'm still trying to come to terms with the fact that I probably won't ever get Mantis' AFD now. Looking at your pictures of AFD framed that I've saved onto my computer doesn't exactly help <quickly fumbling to delete said pics from my computer>. <Rising up onto soap box> Yes, fellow forum dwellers, I suggest we have a ban on sharing such marvels on this open portal to save prolonging this major discomfort and aid my healing process along. Surely pm'ing them between yourselves would be more appropriate given the sensitivities involved here? In fact, if I see another stunning image of AFD I will <getting down off soap box> jolly well turn my computer off altogether. Hey <squinting toward the drawn curtains> is that sunshine out there?

I'm done. Given up. Everyone here's too eager!, by ctc2 on Jul 28, 2007 14:48:12 GMT 1, The whole Banksy thing is really out of control for the average fan. While I could afford to pay some of the current prices, I wont because I dont think that it an efficient use of my money. In my mind it really runs counter to the message on the art and even the theme of POW in the old days. What is nice is how this forum introduces people to new artists who are producing interesting work which is affordable. Emerging artists have more appeal to the mass audience as one can actually participate and own their work. I am glad that Banksy, Laz, and whoever owns POW are now rich. But that does not mean that I have to go broke feeding the machine. Thanks to this fourm, I can find my art elsewhere.

you are so unbelievably lucky. I would give everything i own for just one more day with my daughter. is it your first child? Honest mate, i envy you, that feeling when you hold him/her for the first time, you will know what i mean when it happens. And the funny thing is you dont even resent the things you have to miss out on.

I think the message behind most of Banksy's work get's lost in the confusion and frantic efforts to get your hands on one (I am guilty) but are we really doing the right thing by stressing out because we'll never have a signed Radar Rat. I have sat some nights in front of the pc watching my bids on ebay while my kid's are pulling at me to give them some attention. Later when they're in bed I feel like a selfish t**t for having missed the opportunity. Find a compromise and ne happy. I am trying.
