Banksy:Bird and Grenade at Christie's, by sport1 on Aug 30, 2011 14:50:23 GMT 1, A great piece in my eyes, one of the best pieces to come at auction for a long time ! September just seems a strange time for it to hit the makret.
A teaser estimate for sure.

Banksy:Bird and Grenade at Christie's, by lee3 on Aug 30, 2011 16:27:46 GMT 1, Agreed that it's the best to come to auction in some time. Signed by both artists in the bottom right too. A star lot that I was told has already generated a flood of interest. There is a nice little Dubuffet hourlope (lot 147) and a cool Arman (lot 162) for my eyes both of which are estimated low though i haven't received condition reports yet.

Short answer yes. He obviously cut the stencil and either found or acquired that landscape painting before painting over it too but you are spot on. Plus he probably reused that stencil again in the street and on other works which is Warholesque efficiency. I was quite fond of that painting and thought it was the best to come under the hammer for him in a long time (for me all the way back to a bombing middle england diptych which was picked up for a (comparative) song back in '09)
Banksy Title Bombing middle England (diptych) Description tagged acrylic and spraypaint stencil on canvas, in two parts Executed in 2000. Medium acrylic and spraypaint stencil on canvas Year of Work 2000 Size Height 36.1 in.; Width 36.1 in. / Height 91.6 cm.; Width 91.6 cm. Misc. Signed Sale of Sotheby's London: Friday, February 06, 2009 [Lot 00174] Contemporary Art Day Sale Estimate 30,000 - 40,000 GBP (43,878 - 58,505 USD) Sold For 43,250 GBP (63,258 USD) PREMIUM Currency Converter Provenance Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner in 2000

Banksy:Bird and Grenade at Christie's, by Hubble Bubble on Sept 16, 2011 9:47:40 GMT 1, I'm sorry. I just don't get it. I love most of his stuff but this, to me, smacks of poor composition and finish. 'Police Lines' - or whatever it was called (the one with the 'do not cross barriers' in a Constable-esque landscape was much more incisive, witty and well executed.
I'm sure you guys will shoot me down but I'd MUCH rather have a signed print than this piece. (not just any old print though )
But fair-do's to whoever bought it. If they like it, it's worth it.

No worries as it's all subjective anyway as far as the visual work itself goes; I happen to dig it on a purely visual level too but appreciate anyone saying it's rather simple and silly.
If you take a step back though that one has a lot more going for it than just the image itself. In the handful of years that he's been auctionable it's clear that collectors will pay a premium for the paintings he's done over other artists work. I'm going from memory of my own research and am far from a definitive expert but I don't believe he did anything of the sort on "found canvases" (which is how that is described on the COA) in the shows from the late 90s through Existencilism in '02. If he did there certainly weren't many exhibited. The fact that this work is dated '02 and there are old photos of this exhibited at the Dragon bar followed by Surface to Air gives ample evidence that this was, more than likely, one of the first handful of paintings executed in this manner. That alone can be more important to many collectors than the image itself. Case in point soup cans from '62 are far more valuable than '64 just as a Thiebaud pie from '62 will cost a multiple of one from a decade later.
I agree with you in that it's far from his best stencil or execution but it doesn't matter in this case. To me his work feels more authentic on someone else's work/found mediums than they do on a perfectly primed canvas. I just looked at artnet and it looks like the first of the Vandalized Oils was from 2001 so this bird with grenade was definitely early using that technique:
Banksy Title Vandalised oil no. 001 Description BANKSY Vandalised oil # 001, 2001 Oil and spray enamel on found canvas in artist's frame. 61.5 x 71.5 cm. (24 1/4 x 28 1/8 in). Signed with artist stenciled insignia 'BANKSY' lower right. This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Pest Control Medium oil and spray enamel on found canvas Year of Work 2001 Size Height 24.2 in.; Width 28.1 in. / Height 61.5 cm.; Width 71.5 cm. Misc. Signed Sale of Phillips de Pury & Company London: Friday, February 12, 2010 [Lot 00019] Contemporary Art Evening Sale Estimate 60,000 - 80,000 GBP (94,206 - 125,608 USD) Sold For 121,250 GBP (190,375 USD) PREMIUM Currency Converter Provenance Acquired directly from the artist Exhibition London, Cargo Nightclub, Banksy, 2001
