getting work into a gallery, by beastie on Sept 29, 2011 8:05:34 GMT 1, might be a stupid question, but how do you/did you get started in the art world? do you just wander into a gallery with a canvas?
start up your own website and sell from there?
email a portfolio around the houses?
would love to know how you take your first steps
thanks:)

getting work into a gallery, by Warm Gun on Sept 29, 2011 10:28:25 GMT 1, Funny enough I was in a gallery yesterday when a young dude walked in and asked the same question. The guy who worked for the gallery simply said 'bring your stuff in and we'll have a look'. He also said something along the lines of, as long as it's good, is done well, and fits in with what we sell we'll look at displaying anyone's work. He also mentioned that he gets asked the same question numerous times a day so the competition is tough!
(this was a small independent urban gallery in Brighton, bigger galleries might be more stuck up about dealing with amateurs)

getting work into a gallery, by Karl Read on Sept 29, 2011 11:26:01 GMT 1, Iv had people come to me, purely by posting my work on a few forums and flickr.
Iv also gone in to galleries and asked if they would like to take my work on, as above i have heard similar replies. If your style of work fits in with what that gallery sells, ie urban/street whatever you wanna call it, its worth a go. People will normally give your work a chance if they like it.

getting work into a gallery, by balibob on Sept 29, 2011 11:29:51 GMT 1, I think its pretty much the same in most galleries. Have a look what they have hanging first and make a honest call on yourself, does it fit in?, if it does ask the question. Most galleries have at least an artist a day asking the same question as Warmgun has mentioned above, most of them think their work is fabulous and some do go in with a ''you've got to take my work i'm the new Banksy/Hirst/Yeo'' etc, etc. But if you go in with a good attitude and are prepared to accept their opinion even if it differs to yours, most will look at your work. Good luck mate, let us know how you get on.

getting work into a gallery, by remirough on Sept 29, 2011 11:59:02 GMT 1, In my opinion, the best thing to do is put on your own small show somewhere, put things into any small group shows going, build a bit of background to your CV. try and have a printed record of anything you do, like a small catalogue or online portfolio. Profile is very important.
In my experience the thing that galleries look for the most other than exciting and different artwork, is good presentation. I've seen so many talented artists (and some pretty big names too I may add), let themselves down on the way they present their work...

getting work into a gallery, by johnnyh on Sept 30, 2011 9:52:47 GMT 1, Remi's is great advice.
Galleries are business and when you want your work in a gallery you also want to sell your work.
As with any thing else build your cv and as mentioned your work and portfolio. Galleries must know your serious as well.
Make a plan to create awareness of yourself. Again Remi great example of this with his work that he shows on here, his book etc. Contact newspapers, art mags, do your own shows and invite galleries etc.
Point being do not just rely on a gallery but have a plan and develop yourself as an artist. This will also attract galleries. Map out your future work etc for them to see that you are serious.

getting work into a gallery, by RetroCanvas on Sept 30, 2011 11:02:28 GMT 1, I started painting and selling stuff on ebay about 8 years ago.
Then I made my own site and showed some work at some shows.
Got a few features in some magazines, one being FHM which was a lucky break.
Having work in a gallery is not all that. The commission is very high so you either have to take less for your work so the final price is affordable or risk selling very little at high prices.
If you are starting out I advise to just get a body of work together and make it availible for people to see (website, forums etc) if people like your stuff then you'll get interest and gallery features will come. It's rarely a quick process.
Good luck and get some photos up here for all to see.
