Ebay listing tips, by sal on Oct 18, 2011 13:24:18 GMT 1, Im about to setup my first ever eBay listing, and since it's a valuable one, I'd like to protect myself from any possible problems/scams.. so, I wanted to ask you guys if you could give me any tips you might have on what (not) to do!?..
the item is gonna be sold with free shipping worldwide, and was wondering if I should exclude some countries!?... also, Im totally honest with description and state of what Im selling, but Im not sure if having return policy might cause problems for me (what happens if the buyer receives the item, damages it, and than wants to send it back?!)...
thanks for your help!

Ebay listing tips, by Happy Shopper on Oct 18, 2011 13:58:58 GMT 1, Can't do much about scams, but the worst I've had done to me is people just not paying... but in the end no real harm done.
My advice, list for as long as possible and with a good finish time (Evening UK time on a Sunday for example) Anytime you get a bid on it, check the person out. Block them if they have a bad history... or no history.
I'd stick to sending only to Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan. Sounds bad, but you're unlikely to get bids from the rest of the world anyway, and anyone keen will PM you!

Ebay listing tips, by fairplay1974 on Oct 18, 2011 14:02:56 GMT 1, Always, always send items insured to full value, and keep a detailed post office or courier receipt of the recipient details. If for any reason you cannot prove the item was sent to buyer then if paid via PayPal they will refund the buyer, whether they received the item or not.
Edit - Just to expand, Post Office services and some dispatchers can get lazy and on your receipt/proof of sending will enter broad details, such as country sending to on the receipt only. This is not sufficient for the purposes of PayPal that you sent the goods to the buyer in quetion. Request a detailed receipt. Some unscrupulous buyers overseas try it on, even when they've signed for goods received, I know because I've been a victim - PayPal will refund the buyer if you can't prove proof of sending to the address in question 'confirmed' on their PayPal account. If your goods are also then signed for, any courier/PO will not refund you.
That's another tip, only send to 'confirmed' PayPal addresses.

Ebay listing tips, by saint on Oct 18, 2011 14:20:51 GMT 1, My advice would be to ask for paypal only, state shipping only to paypal verified address, don't post until payment is received, make sure when you send it goes signed for at the very least, i tend to go all out signed for and fully tracked. On the paypal invoice once its gone put the tracking number on, and keep all receipts. I send the item and then once its received send any prov/coa's, that way if something happens to the print i still have the prov and coa's to make claiming easier, and also the buyer can't try anything funny.....
That and put banksy in the listing to get more views of course, standard.

A lot of corruption within the postal system out there apparently. Although, saying that I've not had problems.

Ebay listing tips, by sal on Oct 18, 2011 14:55:18 GMT 1, thanks for the tips everyone...
Happy Shopper - I was gonna list BIN auction first... so no bidding involved.. if that doesn't wok I might try classic auction later on..
fairplay1974 - sending to confirmed PayPal address only, is a VERY good tip.. thanks!
saint - cheers mate!.. I already did most of what you suggested, I just need to add Banksy to it
fingerz - thats a good one too.. cheers!
spencerlee - yeah, I noticed that too.. funny thing is that actually, a boardie from Italy said 10 days ago he was gonna wire me the money next day (and he never logged to the forum after that)...
thanks once again everyone!

italian post is badly known because the delivery service is sometime poor and it's not the first time that a parcel get stolen/disappear while on transit, or is stuck for a long time at customs. BUT not selling to Italy because of that is most of time nonsense. parcel can get lost everywhere and anytime, most of the time if you send with standard mail (no tracking, no insurance, etc) it's more about "luck" than where you ship your stuff. if you use a courier/insured shipping I don't know why you wouldn't ship to Italy.

Ebay listing tips, by mouser on Oct 18, 2011 15:03:32 GMT 1, Take dated pics of the condition of the piece before sending ( before and after packing), to provide additional back up if the item is damaged in transit, it'll help with your case against the post office / courier. Insured / tracked signed for shipping provides peace of mind for both seller and buyer. You cannot wrap / protect it too well. Limit bidders to those with 99% or 100% feedback and reserve the right to cancel bids.

Perhaps use a friends ebay account who has a history of positive feedback as a seller.
Might also improve your chances of selling it, a buyer who doesn't frequent the forums might be cautious about buying a high value item from a new seller on ebay.

not all unconfirmed addresses are dodge, for some reason as I live in a country that doesn't have postal codes it bamboozles the Paypal system and leaves my a/c as having an unconfirmed address... I have 100% positive feedback despite this...

@ dasium - can you not get your address verified another way? I had the same issue when setting up an account at a brand new home, new postcode not even recognised by local services yet. PayPal verified with me another way, can't remember how now.
I agree feedback is a good measure of sending to someone as well, and I to will use that to mitigate risk, but if a seller does send to an unconfirmed address and an issue occurs PayPal won't support a claim in many cases from the seller.
No slur on you at all, or other users that cannot confirm addresses, I've sent to them myself. But for high value items 'confirmed' does help and is still a little extra security, especially if anything else is making your spider sense tingle over the buyer!

Ebay listing tips, by spencerlee on Oct 18, 2011 16:18:55 GMT 1, Yeah, I would say as a seller, do everything to protect yourself, like only selling to Confirmed. Even if it puts people off. 9 times out of 10 eBay, Paypal believe the buyer, and the seller has to jump through hoops, provide documents etc. to verify they are in the right.
On the eBay seller forums there are examples of sellers with 1000s of +ve feedback being ripped off by people with low feedback who seem to be making a career out of false claims.

Ebay listing tips, by kazzazz on Oct 18, 2011 16:55:28 GMT 1, Sal be careful of ebay restrictions. When you sell over a certain amount of items or for a certain value....they will freeze/suspend your account. Remove all listings and want you to provide everything possible to prove that you are who you say you are, live where you say and also have the items you are selling. Had very bad experiences with ebay & paypal both as a buyer and seller......whatever they say IT IS NOT SAFE.
Paypal transactions can be reversed.....so make sure the money hits your actual bank account before you even consider sending anything out. Just because its in Paypal does not mean its safely your money. Some very bad but clever people who are able to evolve scams as Paypal changes security procedures.
Ebay do not answer individual cases....all they do is reply with generic emails.
Not always bad experiences but be careful when selling.....

Very true.
IMO Paypal can be the most impossible company to deal with when things go wrong.
I'd suggest if it's possible arrange to meet your buyer in person particularly with a high value item. I know that's not always an option but eBay is very much weighted towards the buyer than seller. If you do meet in person always take a cash payment, as any Paypal transaction needs a tracking number.
Also if people win auctions but don't pay (I know this isn't applicable as your doing a BIN) make sure you don't mutually cancel. Instead raise an unpaid item dispute so those idiots get the strike that they deserve.
