Berkeley Banky, by 360fish on Nov 15, 2011 7:30:18 GMT 1, On Adeline and Emmerson in Berkeley, CA around Nov 8 this appeared. I see Banksy was elsewhere around that time, according to this board at least, I wonder if anyone knows if he may have stopped by this way?
If not, it's interesting. It's in a very prominent place where graffiti is constantly painted over but this one has stayed up. A clever use of Banksy's persona (if that's the right word).
I've had some converstations with friends around what it means to be 'authentic' so at very least the peice has sparked discussion, and that is core to great art.
So here's to Banksy even when he's not there
I'll let you know if I find anything else out, very interested in your opinions.
You can see a couple more pics on my google profile, it's a really nice location.

Berkeley Banky, by 360fish on Nov 15, 2011 21:45:47 GMT 1, "anyone with access to the internet and a scalpel can ... " lol I love that imagery, and it could apply to so many things. It is going into my taglines, I hope you don't mind if I appropriate it.
I posted the question to the Banksy authentication site (um... pestcontrol?) will update this if they respond.
As I said, this piece has generated some interesting discussions where I've posted it. Most of it has been simple praise, like, Cool! Others are around the meaning of authorship.
My take away - the way a stencil piece interacts with its environment is a crucial part of the art, that's why someone can't just use a Banksy stencil, even if, hypothetically, they got the stencil from Banksy himself and studied his spray technique. This is why I'm confused by people who, for example, remove a door he hit ... erm, used. painted. and sell it as a Banksy.
If you remove the piece from its setting, then there is essentially no difference between a Banksy he painted himself and a Banksy done with an identical stencil and technique, so far as I can tell. Therefor there can be no Banksy for sale in a gallery, etc.
Concerning message. The fame of Banksy has allowed this piece to stay up much longer than it would have otherwise, exposing more people to it and driving them to consider the meaning more closely than they would have otherwise. His fame stems partially from his general renown as a great artist but I believe it's partially derived from the price of his pieces in galleries and the famous people who have purchased them,
Therefore though I believe it's not entirely legit to remove his work from its setting and sell it, at the same time, doing so vastly increases the reach of the art which remains in its original setting and allows it to propagate viral-ly (a cliche in vogue nowadays, forgive me , as may be the case here.
Anyway, maybe not the place for this discussion, but I'm interested to know others take on the value of 'real' as it applies to Banksy, or stencil art in general.

They won't - they never discuss street pieces however 100% genuine or 100% fake (or anywhere in-between) we might might know it to be
