How to help WeiWei with tax money, by skitchy on Nov 7, 2011 22:19:18 GMT 1, This is going to sound pretty ignorant by why doesn't he just get the hell out of china; immigrate to the UK or US? Then he'd be free to make all the anti chinese govt. art he likes, avoid paying these crazy taxes etc. etc.
I hope someone could educate me on this matter...

You do know that grafitti is illegal, eh? That's what some of the images you have on your wall were, once, before the 'deckled edges'...
This place becomes more incredible daily. I am fucking gobsmacked tonight. Ebay regulations! Rules and laws! I hope you ask your lasses permission before you jump her if she's had a glass of wine. You wouldn't want to get into trouble.

IIRC he left when young and promised never to return. He came back when his Father became ill.If you read/learn about him then you might understand his reasons for being a thorn in the side of those in power
His work transends the need to earn money/paying taxes
Of course this is one way they punish him for exposing them as corrupt 'snakes'(possibly taking bribes in building control and building sub-standard schools, leading to the deaths of hundreds of school children)
Hates colour too

How to help WeiWei with tax money, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Nov 7, 2011 23:26:26 GMT 1, WTF??? I am not talking about graffiti... Correct me if I am wrong but he's broken the law as in he hasn't paid his taxes!!! (its in the title) Every person pays taxes, people go to jail in all Countries for not paying their taxes. What I am saying is why is the public or Michael willing to part with their well earned to pay his taxes??? I think it's stupid but each to their own.... Out of the 1.4 Billion people - a lot of people in China get away with it, but if the Government want to clamp down make an example they will, same as sports stars in UK/USA going to jail for not paying taxes. A famous chinese singer a few years back went to jail for a year for not paying taxes, its the LAW.........

How to help WeiWei with tax money, by curiousgeorge on Nov 7, 2011 23:48:09 GMT 1, He actually has the money to pay but has yet again turned the tables on them, and makes them look a bit silly at the same time. Won't be long before they shut down the accounts that you can pay into and probably charge the holders with money laundering or some such..

How to help WeiWei with tax money, by sal on Nov 8, 2011 0:05:13 GMT 1, it sounds to me like JJS reactions are based solely on the title of this topic.. which means he doesn't know a tiny bit about the background of all this.. and if you look @ it that way, he actually has a point.. a wrong one, but still a point
Banksy print with 100% profit going to Ai WeiWei may be imminent. ;D
this actually sounds like quite possible scenario...
here is something to read - Chinese tax authorities send outspoken artist Ai Weiwei new bill for $2.4 million
the more you read about this, the clearer it is why "leaving the country" is not an option for this man.. he's one of the most recognized Chinese man in the world, with HUGE support worldwide... and the longer he stays in the country, and the more he "annoys" the government by pointing out their mistakes, and "making" them oppress him, the more awareness hes gonna raise about whats happening.. it takes a LOT of cojones to stand up against something that big and that powerful...
now, there is a part of the story where most of the world is depending on China and their economy, so they can't/won't do much about it, but that is a whole other thing...

How to help WeiWei with tax money, by Coach on Nov 8, 2011 0:59:32 GMT 1, JJS - honestly, not being condescending here at all, and of course you are entitled to your opinion, and I would be very upset if you werent able to express it - but if you do a little research you will I think see why an awful lot of people are being suppoortive of WeiWei, including donating to his tax bill. It goes way beyond art.

How to help WeiWei with tax money, by johnnyh on Nov 8, 2011 1:01:21 GMT 1, Forget taxes for a minute. No one actually really knows the truth on that but let's look at what we do know.
Ai Wei Wei is well known and famous in china got in trouble after the earth quake In Sichuan when as mentioned above he brought to public attention how many kids had been killed by substandard building of schools and the corrupt gov officials he started some reports into what happened for the local people
Earlier this year hevwas arrested for 81 days when actually leaving the country when it was rumored he was to attend the Nobel prize giving that was being given to Lui Xiaubo. so he has not been able to leave the country since.
This is when the Chinese govt had arrested him with out charge etc. They then as per recent release destroyed his studio. Recently they arrested the blind lawyer. Eg etc. He has not asked for the donations.
Is he guilty of tax evasion may be - has it got anything to do with his charges unlikely. No proper case on the matter etc.
Whiter it is worth sending money is questionable as he says he prefers moral rather than financial support and they may well come up with something else. However the finical support does highlight global feelings to the Chinese govt. oppression. That's why Chinese people are supporting him.
This is why whether for tax or not no one knows or cares as that is not the issue.

So, you really think he hasn't paid his taxes? I'm being redundant, but I don't understand. You think the Chinese government is being straight up here? When they first arrested him, no charges and they didn't disclose his location--straight up?
It is just money. We're talking about freedom here. If a little money can obtain freedom it's worth it!
